Rooney & Scholes lose ban appeals
Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes have both had their appeals against three-match bans rejected by the Football Assocation. The pair were dismissed by Dutch referee Ruud Bossen against Porto in a friendly during the Amsterdam tournament on 4 August.
The ban starts on 23 August, allowing Rooney and Scholes to play in United's opening league game against Fulham.
But they will ineligible for the games against Charlton, Watford and Spurs.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who was particularly angered by Rooney's straight red card for catching Porto's Pepe in the face while challenging for the ball, had been confident the pair would avoid suspension.
Scholes was sent off in the second half after he picked up a second yellow card following a clumsy tackle.
"The bans will start from Wednesday 23 August, 14 days on from the day the FA received the match officials' report from the Dutch FA," said a FA statement.
"Rooney and Scholes were sent off for violent conduct and serious foul play respectively."

What a load of bollocks, why do players get the full 3 game ban for pre season games anyway.
aside from the fact that rooney's challange wasn't even a yellow card offence, i just can't understand the descison there. In the case of scholes i can understand why he was sent of but, it was a freindly and the ref should have used common sense and allowed him to be substitued instead.
lets not forget in one of the games in this preseason tournament, a goalkeeper came out side the penalty area and picked the ball up when an attacking player had it at his feet, and he only got a yellow, had this been in the season he would have been red carded.
FA what a butch of twats, i can garantee if it had happend to a mid or lower table team no team player would be suspended.

OK, I've only seen the Rooney incident once, and at that in the pub (so my opinion may be completely wrong!) but from what people were saying I thought it was going to be an absolutely clear cut incident.
But jumping with your elbows like that you're liable to get someone in the face, thus leaving yourself wide open to getting a red card, and Rooney knows that.
Still a litte harsh perhaps.
--------
As for friendly competitions having red card's bans carrying to domestic football.... Well I think the rules should be clarified.... Either they all count or none do, it's a bit of a joke just letting the FA decide if they count or not.
---------
I didn't see the goalkeeping incident, but he should only get a red card if he prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity. Anything else, and the referee was quite right, keeping the rules, to give him a yellow.
If the ref gave him a yellow, then the he felt the keeper wasn't preventing a clear goalscoring opporunity.
Saying that, if the keeper's out of the box, it's hard to imagine how it wouldn't have been.

I don't think they're suspended for the Fulham game, I'm pretty sure it's for the 3 after that

it's no "fucking crazy"
football is football, i hate how rules get changed based on situations
you see it all the time....a handball/foul in the penalty box is less likely to be given, but if it was outside the box it would have been called 99.9% of the time...thats WRONG: a foul is a foul no matter where its located
same with red cards
people say that red cards shouldnt happen in friendlies....
what's next? no fouls? no offsides? no ref??
If the player comitts a challenge that warrents a red card, whether it's a friendly or the CL Final, then thats end of discussion and he misses 1-3 games depending on how badly it was. They can appeal it, but on the bases that it wasnt a red card...not that they shouldnt serve a ban bc it was a friendly
The rules are there so the game doesnt get out of hand. Afterall, friendlies are normally before the season starts...whose to say a player wouldnt injure a fellow player on purpose to hurt his chances in the following season (based on Ronaldo's antics, it's not far fetched)...red cards help keep control of games
wow, this is such a rant haha

if it was an Arsenal player you (Live4ever) wouldnt be saying the same.
Suspensions like these should only come into affect if its for serious violent contuct like Catonas fly kick, or the Newcaslte fight, or the likes of the Arsenal United match back in the early 90s, not for fuck all

it's no "fucking crazy" people say that red cards shouldnt happen in friendlies.... what's next? no fouls? no offsides? no ref?? i'm not saying there should be a rule preventing red cards in freindlies. But you have to understand in pre season when peoples timing might be a bit out, if they make one poor challange that warrants a red card, yet they have done nothing wrong in the rest of the game should you send him off, no, you should allow him to be subbed. Who wants a pre season game with 11 against 10. It dosen't help anyone. Pre season games are not about results, yes you want to win them, but its about fitness and building a understanding between the players especially with new players. As for suspensions, as dom says unless violent they should not affect the season propper, why give a 3 game ban, where is the need for it.
