Fucking Terry www.thefa.com/England/SeniorTeam/NewsAndFeatures/Postings/2006/08/NewEnglandCaptainTerry is the man Thursday, 10 August 2006. Steve McClaren today named Chelsea captain John Terry as his England captain. The new England Head Coach also confirmed that Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard will be vice-captain. Steve McClaren said: “Choosing a captain is one of the most important decisions a coach has to make. I’m certain I’ve got the right man in John Terry. I’m convinced he will prove to be one of the best captains England has ever had. John has all the attributes an international captain needs: leadership, authority, courage, ability, tactical awareness and a total refusal to accept second-best. He has been an inspiration for Chelsea and is at his best in adversity. Over the five years I’ve been involved with the England coaching set-up I’ve seen first hand the respect that John has among his fellow players. There are a number of strong leaders in the squad and he will not lack support on and off the pitch. Steven Gerrard was a strong candidate for the captaincy and he will be my vice-captain. He is an outstanding player and another superb club skipper who also leads by example. I told Steven when I spoke to him today that I’m sure he will also get the chance to lead his country while I’m Head Coach.” John Terry said: "It is the ultimate honour to be the captain of your country and I am very proud to be given this great opportunity. It is an incredible challenge and one I am looking forward to very much." Steven Gerrard said: “I would like to congratulate John on being appointed England captain. I’m sure he’ll do a great job. He’s a tremendous leader for Chelsea and has all the qualities required to do the role. I’m also pleased to have been appointed vice-captain by Steve McClaren today. I am grateful that Steve took the time to call me and inform me of his decision. There are a number of captains in the England squad and I know we will all be giving 100% support to Steve and John.”

Hmm. Disappointed for Stevie G as the england captaincy would have made him a better player for england imo. But Terry is no doubt a very gooda lbeit slightly overated player and he will be a good captain for the team as long as he doesn't fuck about off the field.

I'd have picked Gerrard too, but Terry will be good. Lead by example an' all that.

Terry is best man for the role imo I agree. I think this was on the cards as John Terry was the used as a motivator in the changing rooms during the World Cup. I personally prefer a captain to be in defence as most of the game is played ahead of them.

Sure he will be a good captain.
On another note, I just read on teletext that Mclaren is not gonna pick Beckham for his first game. What do all you guys think about that?
Think he's just trying to quietly faze him out of the squad or what?

McClaren is doing that purly because he wants to be seen as starting a fresh start, when Beckham is still the best man for the job, and the best deleiver of a deadball in the world

G Neville should have been made captain, always certain to play (when fit) and a natural leader.

Gary Neville is too old to be made captain. I think you're right, he won't be around by the next world cup, probably, and consistency with a captain is a very important part of the role. I think Terry's the right man, he's just captined his team to two championships, he's well spoken, and defenders as captains are in general, I believe, far better than attacking players.

Exactly and added to the fact that he'll end 2006 as a 26 year old he will almost definitely make the next world cup as his b'day is in December anyway so he'll only be 29 in 2010. He can have a good 6-8 years at the job if he plays his cards right, Gary Neville will be 35 at the next world cup and keepin the armband till 2008 and then changing it is wrong IMO. Captains should last at least 4 years.

why do people think defenders make better captains? i don't see that it matters, where they play.
i am happy for terry to be the captain and yes he may be around for 8 years. but we should only look as far as 2 years as far as i am concerned, having blown a golden oppertunity to win the world cup. Maybe its because i am biased as a man utd supporter, but i just think Gary Neville is a more natural leader, and would do a better job than John Terry.

Fair enough mate. But I reckon that the england captaincy shouldn't change within 2 years. But Terry should do a good job. Although I reckon he is our 3rd best defender behind Woodgate and Ferdinand.

Wes Brown... nah he ain't better than Ferdinand IMO. I know Ferdinand loses concentration at times but at the WC he was terrific and showed what he can do wen he is on the ball.

why do people think defenders make better captains? i don't see that it matters, where they play. quite literally because they have a better view of whats going on than strikers do, they're always looking at the play ahead of them
