Spurs may seek replay of final game to defuse controversy By Jason Burt Published: 09 May 2006 Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a plea to the Premier League for Sunday's match against West Ham United to be replayed. Eight players, and two support staff, fell ill before the game, which Spurs lost, ending their hopes of finishing fourth and qualifying for the Champions' League.
Remnants of a lasagne dish eaten by the players at the Marriott Hotel in Canary Wharf, east London, on Saturday evening were being examined yesterday by environmental health officers. Initially it was feared that the players had suffered food poisoning. Test results are not expected before Thursday, although suspicion has switched to some form of airborne virus or viral gastroenteritis. Colin Perrins, the head of environmental health for the local borough of Tower Hamlets, said: "There are a number of lines of enquiry that are being investigated, one of which is food poisoning."
Spurs officials, who were notified of a problem at 5am on Sunday, had tried to get the game delayed for 24 hours, but their request was refused by the Premier League. They were eventually offered a two-hour delay to help the players to recover but Spurs' medical staff wanted longer. The club, fearing that they could have points deducted if they did not fulfil the fixture, decided to go ahead. Their head coach, Martin Jol, later said that some players had been throwing up in the dressing-room minutes before kick-off.
Six of those affected - Michael Carrick, Michael Dawson, Edgar Davids, Robbie Keane, Aaron Lennon and Teemu Tainio - started the match, which was lost 2-1, letting Arsenal leapfrog Spurs into the lucrative fourth spot, a result that could cost the club £10m in revenue.
Spurs may take legal action against the hotel, if it is found to have been at fault, or even the Premier League. The Spurs chairman, Daniel Levy, is understood to have canvassed the opinion of other club chairmen and to have received sympathetic responses.
Spurs believe that playing the game again would be an option, a move favoured by the club's supporters' trust. However, the Premier League said last night that there was no mechanism in its rules for the game to be played again.

the season is played over 38 games. Spurs were in the top 4 since December, so for Arsenal to claw back and over take Spurs shows how Spurs bottled it BEFORE the West Ham game. It shouldnt have come down to the last game of the season.
And, as ive said before, the good teams can win without several members of their first team.
Reasons why the game couldnt be postponed: 1.) 'What if they wernt sick' conspiracies would be flying around instead, and thats even worse than if the foul play stories are correct 2.) Teams cant postpone games if they have injuries, look at Arsenal this year....no LB for most of the season 3.) West Ham have a Cup Final next weekend, and the later they play the more tired they will be for that -- not fair to them 4.) Spurs would have the advantage of seeing what Arsenal did....so they could adjust tactics and effort accordingly
Reasons why the game cant be replayed: 1.) There's no rule 2.) West Ham would have to agree, and they wont 3.) Discredits West Hams effort alot of the reasons above apply here too
sorry spuds, you bottled it...

No chance of replay whatsoever, Spurs would have a legal case against The Marriot if they are negligent and it will cost them dear, but the Premier League clearly told Spuds it was their choice if they played or not, but they could not risk not playing and getting athree point penalty like Boro did (which relegated them). Pure and simple it is unlucky!, and whta I believe is really unfair is, what is to say a good West ham team would not have beaten a full strength fit Spurs team!, you lost, you play the UEFA Cup (A mega improvement for a team like Spurs!) just stop WHINING!

I thought Spurs were offered a 2 hr delay..which wouldn't make a hell of a lot of difference if the players were sick.. Understandably West Ham didn't want the game postponed til Monday, because they wanted all week to prepare for the FA Cup final.
If the food poisoning is traced to the hotel, Spurs could sue the Marriot for potential loss of earnings. It would be a difficult case to prove, but at the same time the hotel need to do some damage limitation.

the point is the issue was raised prior to the game its not only because they have lost, the rules are shit they should have played a day later. West ham were brilliant though and when arsenal win th CL it won't mean a thing.

A tosser is a British and Australian slang term for a disliked or incompetent person generally synonymous with wanker.
The literal meaning of the word tosser once meant a heavy drinker but now is the same as wanker — someone who masturbates. (Cfr. "to toss off".)
