LONDON (Ticker) - Chelsea on Monday signed Germany captain Michael Ballack on a three-year contract.

The 29-year-old moves to Stamford Bridge on a free transfer with his Bayern Munich contract expiring this summer.

Ballack is Chelsea's first signing since securing back-to-back Premiership titles.

"I am very happy to be here," Ballack told a news conference on Sky Sports News. "They are very friendly people and London is a nice city. It is very special and I have good impressions.

"I asked some players about England - Robert Huth, Jens Lehmann - and they told me good things about this country and I am happy to be here."

Mourinho said he was looking forward to working with Ballack and building his team's midfield around the German and England star Frank Lampard.

Mourinho, who did not take questions from reporters and instead asked his own, said on Sky Sports News, "How can Michael's arrival affect Lampard and the team? It will affect it a lot because Lampard wants top players to play with him and the team want good players to improve the team.

"I look forward to working with them and look forward to playing both together."

Mourinho also asked himself whether the Premiership champions would be signing many more players this summer.

"Is he the first of many? No," Mourinho said. "He is the first of a few because we don't need a lot of players, just two or three very good players. We have now been champions for two consecutive years and we want to be more than that. We have already the team, now we need two or three world-class players to join the special team we have to make it even better than that.

"Chelsea is very happy and we think English football should be very happy he plays for Chelsea and plays in the Premiership. We have a team of champions and to improve a team of champions we need champions. A champion is coming here to help follow our target for next year."

seems pointless really. They are already stacked at midfield unless some guys like swp transfer out in the summer.

Won't drop Lampard and Chelsea aren't the same without Makelele so what position will ballack get regular first team football? Duff/Robben on the left of midfield/wing and Joe Cole, one of Chelsea best players last season wouldn't like to spend more time on the bench me thinks.

Ballack, as good as he is, seems like a pointless signing for Chelsea. More and more players will be unhappy at being on the bench. Just look at how SWP's potential has been basically destroyed.

I strongly dont think RA will be around for 8 more years, and I dont see JM staying beyond 5 more seasons. Hell, he almost quit TWICE last season. He's v instable. I think Chelsea will implode in the near future and wont be able to touch Liverpools dominance in the 80s or Utds in the 90s. But we'll see. They have destroyed the competition in the premiership though.

JM wonders why Chelsea get no respect....all he has to do is look at how they 'achieved' their 'success' and how he, JM, has conducted himself. He's such a child that guy.

One thing that Chelsea doesnt have that Man Utd and maybe Arsenal do is that Champions League trophy...oh and the FA CUP (in recent years) hahahahahhahahaha
