I have fallen in love with Tangerine Dream, Simon Slator particularly Rebellion, a changed safer name) and Aphex Twin's ambient output (thanks mossy). I'm looking for artists who are not neccessarily hours long but easy to get lost in (and fall asleep If I feel like it.)

Yeah I love Aphex Twin's ambient stuff too, quite dark and sinister. There's a deluxe anniversary edition of Selected Ambient Works II coming out soon, with bonus tracks. This one came out recently.
Apollo by Brian Eno is probably the most popular of ambient albums. Most of his are fairly relaxing.
But there's so so much out there. Not necessarily one to sleep to, but Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's On The Echoing Green mixes ambient style with shoegaze. Cantu-Ledesma has plenty of other, quieter ambient albums but mentioned that one as that's the only one of his I've bought so far. William Basinski is always a good shout too, listen to The Disintegration Tapes.
I've been listening to Late Spring by Chihei Hatakaeyama during work. Very relaxing and soothing. Probably more 'mass produced' ambient work rather than anything of artistic merit but focuses your mind if you are doing important tasks.
That's literally off the top of my head, but will seek out more recommendations.

Big ambient fan here. For sleeping you’ll struggle to beat Marconi Union - Weightless (Ambient Transmission 2) or Tom Middleton - Sleep Better, which he made after doing a degree in sleep science. Other great stuff: The Orb. Start with their first two albums, Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and UFOrb. The full 40+ minute single The Blue Room is great too. There’s humour all the way through their music, it’s playful rather than dark or serious. Mixmaster Morris AKA The Irresistible Force - Flying High & Global Chillage. Mixmaster Morris’s collaborations with Pete Namlook are good too - Dreamfish. Global Communication - 76:14. Biosphere - start with Microgravity. System 7 - start with 777. The Future Sound of London - Lifeforms. The Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences. I second The Disintegration Tapes too matt. The first 6 Cafe Del Mar compilations by Jose Padilla are worth checking out. More for Sunday chilling than sleeping to though. And as a big metal fan have you tried the dungeon synth genre? Might be up your street. Plenty to get your teeth into there Elie De Beaufour 🐴 😎

Agree with mossy on Marconi Union. Good stuff! I’ll add John Hopkins, he has some decent stuff too.

His collaboration with a criminally (outside of Japan anyway) jazz drummer is remarkable

I'm looking for artists who are not neccessarily hours long but easy to get lost in (and fall asleep If I feel like it.) I made a record some years ago specifically for falling asleep to. And still regularly listen to it for that purpose.
Also this one if you seek just a bit more variation/melody in the sound but still trancelike and dreamy so you can drift off
Also: Brian Eno - Thursday Afternoon
