mystoryisgory ...
If you wanna try some C.U.T.T.I.N.G edge music, these are my favourites of the year so far:
1. Arca (Self-Titled) 2. I See You - The XX 3. A Crow Looked at Me - Mount Eerie 4. DAMN - Kendrick Lamar 5. More Scared of You than You are of Me - The Smith Street Band 6. 50 Song Memoir - The Magnetic Fields
7. You're Not as ___ as You Think - Sorority Noise 8. Pleasure - Feist 9. Prisoner - Ryan Adams 10. All Amerikkkan Badass - Joey Badass
Weirdly, I'm the opposite of you - I love listening to all-new music and current bands, so it takes me a lot longer than most to discover the classics. I only got into Bowie this year, and a lot of bands like The Who and The Jam I haven't really tried. I suppose in a way I'm hoping to witness the rise of something, so I can say "I liked that as soon as it came out", the way my dad does with Definitely Maybe . Will Car Seat Headrest's second album build on their debut and be a big hit? Is Arca this generation's Aphex Twin? Is Kendrick the GOAT? All of these are probably answered by a "no", but I'd like to witness it first hand if one of them isn't...
That looks like a cracking list just based on the names of the albums and the groups. Which is probably a terrible way to judge how good music is haha. I'll repay the favor and give you a list of great albums that I've discovered and gotten to know inside out this year. You may already know some of them, but perhaps this'll help you churn through the classics ( mystoryisgory certified classics, at least ) Incidentally, none of them were released in 2017. 1. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing..... 2. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back 3. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden 4. Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 5. Primal Scream - XTRMNTR 6. Talking Heads - Remain in Light 7. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico 8. Can - Tago Mago 9. Air - Moon Safari 10. De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising 11. David Bowie - Low 12. Disco Inferno - D.I. Go Pop

What about Pink Floyd? Well into them. Found them early, so it's all ok there mystoryisgory, I definitely know Endtroducing, and I'm pretty conversant with Low and The Velvet Underground. A couple of others I've tried once or twice, but for some reason never got on well with them - I'll be sure to try them all again soon!

Bit of a follow-up to the wall of text I posted last night....
I think the main appeal of music of past decades is that nobody remembers the crap. Hindsight is a powerful quality control filter that alters our perception of the past. As much as people on here (including myself) champion the 90's as a golden age of music, we have to remember that the 90's also gave us Eurodance. And Goldie. And hordes of cheap imitators that tried to capitalize on the success of bands like Oasis, Blur, The Stone Roses, etc. Hell, Blur started out as one of those cheap imitators! I can't imagine the proportion of shit music being that different in any previous decade than it is today. It's just fortunate that all of the terrible music of yesterday has been rightly forgotten.

Being a music addict is such a pain sometimes. I've just bought a very expensive Japanese version of an album that I already own because it has a bonus track on it which can't be found anywhere - legally or illegally. The thing is,I'm pretty much skint and I should be using money for more important matters I've already spent a lot of €€ on music & related stuff this year and we're not past May yet

So I was watching Doomben this afternoon. Holy smokes, Matt McGillivray was ignored by mainstream media today. So because he made a fuck up, he deserves a kick to his head? Seems like they're on the drugs he was, not him.

Hey, man, y'know...err...words were had...issues were raised and...err...some people lost...y'know, lost the use of their legs - I think what's important here is that we don't start playing the blame game...

I've not been posting as much as I used to, but not for any reason but lack of time. I actually have quite a fulfilling and busy life, I've got too many things to enjoy to cram into the days. I've been enjoying being outside and looking after my growing garden, spinning records on my new turntable while reading through stacks of books and enjoying endless cups of tea, walks in the forest and learning to spot birds, cooking and housework (always whilst listening to music), playing guitar, volunteer work, going to the gym and training, and of course working a full time job I love.
I very much enjoy visiting here and reading what all of you (or at least most of you) have to say - seriously - and I do check the forum usually daily on my mobile device when I've got 10 mins but I hate typing out on a mobile device. It's the first time in a week at least that I've been sat on the computer at home, so I can post more freely. I really am quite content to not use the computer outside work most days.
Also had some big changes in life. Good ones. Well, one namely. Got married last month, so now I'm living with another person - which is great but does cut into your 'free time' from single life. Wedding was great, nice and simple and classy. Walked down with my bride to a lovely piano version of Champagne Supernova (ripped from Youtube actually). Getting ready the day of I chose to listen to DBTT. I don't know why that one, it just seemed to speak to me. So after getting the suit on and blaring "Lyla", it's hard not to feel ready for anything.

So living in East London now, when I get the quick bus to the station, I see on the horizon a building that looks very familiar.
It's the Balfron Tower - a famous building that features in the external shots in the video of Morning Glory and The Verve's This Is Music!

How does it compare to the last time you were living in London? As I recall (perhaps falsely) it was a bit of a letdown before. New job is promising?

Managed to get 'lucky dip' tickets for the Rolling Stones in Amsterdam, later this year. Always been a big fan but it never worked out to see them. Felt a bit like a last chance to see them, so very happy with the tickets!

Felt a bit like a last chance to see them, so very happy with the tickets! I totally forgot that tickets for the Stones went on sale this morning. I would have loved to see them once in a lifetime, but the ticket prices. Well done to you and enjoy. I might just go to Arena on the day of the gig and standing outside to catch the music.

I know the excuse Scone threw everyone about Jean (Etienne) Dubois was not true. They wouldn't know the legend if he fell on top of them. That said, Allez Al Capone Jet tomorrow!
EDIT: Nice one Coignard.

Yeah, things are going much better this time round thanks. The new job is way more promising, and that's what's really making the difference. Last time I was in London, I was on a placement in parliament. Despite popular perceptions from some (original House of Cards, place of Machiavellian brilliance), it is distinctively unglamorous, extremely dull and I was earning a pittance while mopping up the mess created by our boss. Frustration is not the word. The things I struggle with - as a Scottish islander completely not used to the fast paced life here - are still the bugbears like rush hour on the underground and general rudeness I find from folk (barging and pushing their way past you while they are fixated on their phones). However, to get around that, the best thing about my job is they are an agile organisation so they let you come in at a later time in the morning if you wish (or work from home but I'd probably spend all my time on this forum!) so I can time it to miss rush hour. That might mean leaving a bit later in the evening, but I'd still prefer a more relaxed journey back! I'm renting out a room as I said in East London - best value I find. Nice young couple renting out a spare room - artists, so very bohemian and very hipsterish! Huge music collection but so left field it's unbelievable and I barely know any of it, to the point the guy sneers at The Beatles! Bands like Oasis and U2 were obviously a no go area for him but we did eventually find common ground (some electronica like Boards of Canada we like) and he highly rates Dylan (talked extensively about Planet Waves album as it was surprisingly his 'favourite'!), Bowie and Springsteen (the latter I was delighted to hear) which have been the basis of our music conversations.
