This was track made over 30 years ago, but sounds like it was recorded yesterday. Kudos to the remastering team here.

I absolutely love it, Columbia is my favourite Oasis song and it's great to have yet another different version of it and an even longer version of it. I love the different lyrics and I'm really looking forward to hearing all the rest of the unreleased tracks.

I'm not saying it's better than the original, just different and glad we have this version now too. I'm looking forward to the rest of the tracks too even though I wasn't that excited originally when they published the track listing.

This is the type of stuff I wait for as a fan with no releases down the years apart from colour vinyl re issues and picture discs, rough unheard demoβs/outtakes what made the album a classic, im looking forward to this more than the release in 2014.

Not had a chance to dig over this one forensically yet (the new Columbia) - but assume it's an extended version of the album version with a different mix, different Liam vocal in the chorus (falsetto) and an unremoved extra verse/extended outro? Anyone able to confirm?
Cheers,
TWB.

Damn, this is an amazing version. It sounded a bit too slow for me at first but the mix is really good and it punches you right in the face with a good pair of headphones.

It's funny when people say that Liam has regained his old voice and sounds like he did in the '90s again. It's commendable that he has slightly improved compared to about fifteen years ago, but he's far from his old voice. This version of 'Columbia' reminds us of what old Oasis was - a band with limitless potential. Or at least it looked like that. And the talk about them being the new Beatles wouldn't sound ridiculous to me at all if I heard a band like this now. The potential was enormous. And Liam's voice sounded like a voice ready for great things. Not only did Noel quickly fall into a songwriting crisis, but even if Noel had continued to develop as a songwriter and write more complex and better songs, Liam wouldn't have been able to keep up because his voice also became like Noel's songwriting - one-dimensional and boring. I understand that some prefer his voice from the late '90s and early 2000s, but that voice and his singing only contributed to the band's one-dimensionality, limiting options and creativity. Also, that style of singing led to the later complete destruction of his voice. I do wonder if his voice would hold up on a full Oasis reunion tour as well as it has in the past few years. I imagine the songs would be done slightly differently, and put more pressure on him.

Knowing that Noel could do his set of 4 or 5 songs, I'm sure so, Liam would only have to sing 15 or 16 songs per show

Holy fuck, what a song. Listening to the song a few times on my way home from work, these were my initial thoughts. 1. Guigsy's bass! 2. Liam sings "This is confusion, am I confusing you" three times and finishes with one "This is peculiar, we don't want to feel ya," which in many live recordings (Knebworth is a prime example), he does the exact same thing, leaving the album version of 2 apiece the abnormality. I wonder what caused that change? 3. The throwaway lines like "To those in the me-di-a, all we can say to ya, this is confusion, and I confusing you" and the second one that I still can't catch all of it. 4. An outro. No fade-out. Audibly shouted "An outro!? Hell yeah!" in my car This is a proper jam song and I loved all 7 minutes of it. Hot take that this should've been a single. This has re-energized my excitement for these outtakes. I think opening those summer '96 gigs with this song fit perfectly. Loved it. 10/10. More please

Wow, loving this version of Columbia (my favourite Oasis track). Why was this not the original teaser? It's interesting to hear all of the little structural differences. They definitely improved the track for the final version but it's a cool outtake for sure. The spoken word part (which we've previously heard Noel deliver on early demos, albeit not as clearly) is the following. I've used some AI vocal isolation tool (lalal.ai - amazing stuff) to help. davidjay Norris Green is a suburb in Liverpool. Seeing as the lyrics were written in Liverpool with The Real People this makes total sense. Can someone clarify all the versions of Columbia we now have? I think this is pretty much it but there's a lot more detail that you can go into. Is the Sawmills version (that was unofficially released with the studio version of 'I am the Walrus') just a poor transfer or unmixed version of the outtake we've just gotten? I'm not entirely sure how that fits in. 1. Columbia - 0:37 - [Instrumental] [Excerpt] [Live - 5 Jan 1992] 2. Columbia - 5:15 - [Porter Street Studios Demo 1] 3. Columbia - 5:20 - [Porter Street Studios Demo 2] - 'Live Demonstration' demo tape version 4. Columbia - 5:24 - [Porter Street Studios Demo 2] - Stereo Remix - 'White Label Demo' version 5. Columbia - 5:37 - [Sawmills Studio] - Eden Studios Mix (Mixed by Anjali Dutt) - As released on the 2014 reissue 6. Columbia - 7:17 - [Sawmills Studio] - Outtake (Mixed by Noel Gallagher & Callum Marinho) - As released on the 2024 reissue 7. Columbia - 6:17 - [Sawmills Studio] - Album version (Mixed by Owen Morris)

Other than that, that looks right to me TWB

I deeply love this version of columbia at Sawmills. I had no enthusiasm for the reissue until this version arrived. I think it's better than the final version of the album. It has the flavor of a Jam session which for me was always a beautiful factor that distinguished the old Oasis. I can't wait to listen to the other versions from the same session!

It doesn't have any of the extra lyrics that are in the new one. There's also a different mix of the Anjali Dutt version on the Safety Masters bootleg where the later samples come in at different times.

That suggests this version is one of the live takes (seem to remember a comment that they recorded each song 2 - 3 times as Sawmills). That would make the 'Eden Studios Mix' a later version.

We can go on about Liam's voice or Noel's songwriting 'til the cows come home. But man that sound, that's what I love.
A real squall, so loud, dirty, raw, brazen, reverberating..... nothing like the milky tea sounds of Noel's solo stuff like Lock All The Doors or You Know We Can't Go Back or the at times overly polished rock sound of Liam's solo career.
Nothing sounds like this. They don't sound like that either. Get it back to this stuff, this is the real deal.

kinda related to definitely maybe (but also all of oasis) but i just went to the exhibition in manchester that Kyle Dale hosted, and im mindblown. so much rare oasis stuff in there. he even played me an unreleased tune with liam on vocals from 2005 in the studio for DBTT sessions that has never been shared online, it sounded mega.

We get it. No need to get your knickers in a twist. It's as good an example of a blandly recorded track that has some echoes of Definitely Maybe in its writing but no spirit in the recording. A comparison of then and now, what was right then and isn't anymore.
