Hello everybody, so as we all know over two years ago both nights at Knebworth were finally officially released for the first time, in both BlueRay Disc, DVD and also released as a sort of highlight Live Album. But while watching / listening both the full concerts, that were officially released and listening to the audience recording from the night and the radio broadcast audio as well as the promo VHS from the second night, I noticed some edits that were made and that I wanted to mention. I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this in a thread or as a post but if anyone did then please forgive me to mention it again.
So first of all I think the most obvious thing, that is in both concerts, is that they used different camera angles then in before released official footage. This you can notice when you compare Columbia (08/10) from the full concert to the footage that was included in snippets in the 2016 Supersonic documentary, where when Liam says "Knebworth mad for it?" in the doc the camera shows a closeup on Liams face while the concert video shows an angle where we can see Liam from the front. In my opinion I liked the angle that was used for Supersonic. I also wanted to mention that in the Supersonic doc different footage from different songs, from the first night, were used like footage from Noel that is from the My Big Mouth performance.
Also there are a few audio dropouts noticeable throughout both nights but mostly from the first night. These happen only in some of the banter sections. One instance is at the first night right after Columbia where Noel says "thank you very much".
1st Night (August 10, 1996)
- first of all the The Swamp Song was removed and the footage was shortened but you can hear the beginning of the song a little bit
- Noels and Liams Parklife (Sadlifes) banter was removed. The official footage just starts with Noel putting on his guitar and then cuts were the banter would start and continues with Noel wanting to go a second time to the amps but starts to begin Columbia. You can notice the cut a bit when you watch Liam in the background, as Noel puts on his guitar Liam goes to his mic then the footage cuts to a different angle were Liam is standing at Whiteys drums and filling some beer in a cup.
- In Columbia during the section were Noel sings "yeah" an echo effect is used on his mic. In the official release this effect is omitted or was made quieter.
- right in the beginning of the solo in Morning Glory, Liam says something. I can't really understand what he is saying. In the official release this was made quieter but you can still here him say something. In the video from the 2014 webmaster you can hear Liam more clearly.
- the next banter that was removed is the banter were Liam asks the crowd "Is anyone out there who got BSE?" before Round Are Way. The footage just cuts from Noel standing to his amps to a different angle directed to the crowd and then back to Noel standing at his mic saying "alright... Round Are Way"
- during Cast No Shadow, when Noel does the backing vocals on "pride" in the chorus, an echo effect is sometimes used on his mic. This was omitted in the official release or at least made quieter.
- right before The Masterplan Noel switches his acoustic guitar and you can hear Bonehead strumming his guitar. In the official release this was made quieter. In the DTV footage and in the audience recording you can hear the strumming clearly.
- before My Big Mouth Liam and Noel have a quick banter to introduce the new song. In the official release this banter was made quieter. In the 2016 Be Here Now Reissue however the banter is loud and clear. I don't know why exactly they made it quieter because in the audience audio you also can hear them very clear so they are not far away from the mic or something else.
- the next thing was edited or rather corrected is the voice crack in Live Forever. In the 3rd time the Chorus repeats, on "...wanna live I don't wanna die..." Liam voice cracks on die. In the official release this was corrected by either using pitch correction or using another vocal from before or the second night. This also occurs during My Big Mouth were Liam cracks a bit on the chorus parts. I think pitch correction was used to limit the voice cracks. The raw not corrected parts can be heard on the Be Here Now 2016 Anniversary edition.
- In I Am The Walrus after Liam is finished singing he throws around some of the drum mics (overheads? and bass mics). Because of that in the audience and radio broadcast recording you can't really hear the snare and bass drum but in the official recording this was fixed so the full drumset can still be heard.
- In Champagne Supernova and I Am The Walrus John Squire joins the stage to play guitar which was loud and present on the audience and radio broadcast recording. In the official release John Squires guitar was made quieter.
2nd Night (August 11, 1996)
- The Swamp Song is again omitted but we can hear a little part of the beginning
- before Slide Away there is a banter between Noel and Liam where Liam announces the next song before Noel continues to talk. Liams introduction was made quieter in the official footage release. However in the official highlight live album as well in the radio broadcast and in the promo footage you can hear his introduction loud and clear.
- during the Solo in Slide Away, Liam says some words to the crowd (I can't really understand what he is saying... something with "...beautiful people..." and "... in the area"). In the official release Liams banter was made quieter but you can still here him saying something.
- at the end of Cigarettes & Alcohol Liam punches the mic out of the stand which made a loud "pop" sound. This was made quieter in the official release.
- In Cast No Shadow Liam says "This Song is for Rob Collins... Live Forever mate". The official release omitts "... Live Forever mate" and plays the audio from the first night. You can hear this when Noel starts to play the song and a woman starts to scream. Half of Cast No Shadow includes the audio from the first night until the second time Liam sings "As he faced the sun he Cast No Shadow" and then it is fading in to the audio of the second night. I cannot really explain why they choose to use the audio from the first night for half of the song. Also the mixing is a bit different letting it sound a bit more direct.
- After My Big Mouth Liam says "This one is called It's Getting Better Hindu". This is omitted and the official release let's him say "It's Getting Better Man" using the Getting Better Man from the first night.
- at the end of Champagne Supernova Liam says thank you to the crowd and announces I Am The Walrus. In the official release Liams banter is lowered. Why this was made quieter is unknown because you can see Liam close to his mic and in the Promo VHS footage and the bonus There And Then... CD you can hear him loud and clear.
- In Champagne Supernova and I Am The Walrus John Squire joins the stage to play guitar which was loud and present on the audience and radio broadcast recording. In the official release John Squires guitar was made quieter.
Altough these edits were made I love the official releases and I love finally seeing these legendary nights. If you have any additions on some more edits that were made or you want to mention something I didn't notice just let me know
. Hope you all are having an amazing day
cheers.
