I’m speaking in general terms. They haven’t really been the same since that range I have above. I feel like weight of love was their jumping the shark moment, everything afterwards just didn't hit any heights reached before. I don’t mind Turn Blue but in general I agree. Ohio Players is their best since El Camino to me, but still a ways away from that one… |

Quite like all 3 tunes, real toe tappers. Can anyone confirm if he played slide for On The Game. Saw someone on twitter saying this was the case but I doubt it.

If Noel is gonna continue to do joint tours in America, he should consider one with the Black Keys. Garbage ain’t my thang but the Keys are. Especially their 2006-2010 output. Heard a song by them in a highway restop bathroom today and enjoyed it. Had no idea it was them unitl I Shazamed it. The app didn't save the tune sadly, but was an odd coincidence since I just listened to the new Noel tunes the last few days. |

"On the Game" is the kind of uplifting anthemic songwriting Noel can easily write and has lately tried to return to with corny results. This comes oh so close to hitting similiar cringe beats. But it doesn't. The difference from those recent efforts and this is the colorful instrumentation. I have a feeling if this were Noel alone, it'd be slathered with sleigh bells. But instead its nice keys replacing that cloying jangle. This is the kind of production Noel's new stuff desperately needs.
The chorus on "Only Love Matters" is pure Noel, with the kind of propulsive pace necessary for this not to become a plodding bore. Once again, this is the kind of life and energy Noel needs to inject into his actual solo work. The difference in production and arrangement is so noticeable from his thin, all-too predictably paced contemporary rock tracks.
"You Pay" is my favorite. It sounds like the other better route "The Mexican" could have gone had Noel not given into his worst impulses. Just so many great hooks in this that get to the bluesy psychedelic pop stomp Noel is often aiming toward.

It's the best Black Keys album since Brothers. El Camino was OK but had the bigger songs. The follow on from those has been fairly awful. This is decent enough.
Like the George Harrison vibes to the Noel collabs on this one.

I never 'got' the Black Keys, especially after a mainstream hit like Lonely Boy, when I first heard of them. But I had the 3 Noel-co-written songs on repeat now since the weekend. Earworming stuff. Especially On the Game which I wish was performed by the High Flying Birds and Only Love Matters, which grows with every listen. Although it's produced and constructed like a Beyoncé track.

The Black Keys were on the Writer’s Block with David Fricke this week, I only caught a little bit today as I was in dispose. Noël’s collaboration was mentioned, again, I didn’t hear the whole story, something about how Noël doesn’t really collaborate but he did with them.
Líam was also talked about, saying they spent time with him while in London.
Heard a few songs the Black Keys picked out for the show, none of which I’d ever heard of but were pretty good.

Well, my favourite song on the album was ‘On the Game’, and I've listened to it over and over since it came out. And then I went to see the Black Keys in Paris a week and a half ago. And that song just doesn't work live at all. Where I was, nobody was moving or singing. On the other hand, people seemed to really like ‘Only Love Matters’. There was a great atmosphere on that song.

Not surprised. They shot way over their heads on this tour. They aren’t in their prime anymore. Arenas use to be only for mega stars, not indie rock darlings who had critical successes 12-15 years ago. Arcade Fire had similar trouble on their Everything Now tour in 2017. Half filled arenas at best except for NY, CHI and LA. It felt embarrassing. |
