RELENTLESS NOEL - 'I don't look back at the past. If Liam didn't play Oasis songs, he wouldn't even be able to sell out a place with 30 people', Noel says
Since there is no talk of a reunion, the paths of the Gallagher brothers are increasingly divergent. Liam, the frontman, has announced a solo tour to celebrate 30 years of that masterpiece that was «Definitely Maybe». After that Parisian evening in 2009 in which guitars flew and family and band broke up, Noel sought his own path which, at least in sounds and research, tried to stay away from the common past. Noel, you will be at the Forum in Assago this evening for a show where the main character is your music more than music from the past. Is it up to your brother to embody the band's legacy?
“I don't think that's really the case in terms of legacy. But yes, I released an amazing album and to tell the truth, if Liam didn't play Oasis songs he wouldn't even be able to sell out a place with 30 people. So I wish him well without any problem, but I'm an artist who moves forward following his own pace and writing songs that are as good as the ones I wrote for Oasis." Those from your latest album «Council Skies» are dark and melancholic... something one doesn't expect from Noel Gallagher...
«I wrote a lot during lockdown and I have material for two more records. Since it was a fairly dark moment, it's probably a reflection of that. And maybe the fact that I wasn't going through a personally happy moment also matters. In concerts, however, this element is not felt. They are always a great party."
In the title track you sing about a shooting star to catch to raise a glass to better days... You have experienced them. What was the shooting star?«The star is an analogy to indicate the capture of a dream, but the phrase refers to the better days that are yet to come and not to those of the past. I don't like living in the past."
Let's look to the future then. Are you worried about the idea that when you are no longer here someone might open your drawers and your archives as it has happened in recent days with "Now and Then", the Beatles' unreleased song?
«I wouldn't want to die and leave everything in a drawer, I would lik even the songs that I think are less good to come out. Also because I didn't like many of the tracks I released, but they found an audience that liked them." U2 are in Las Vegas with a technological and spectacular show. Does this blockbuster dimension convince you or does the music risk taking a backseat?«I have a different approach than U2, but that is the greatest show on earth. I would never try to do something like that, but that's what they always do. It doesn't matter how big their shows are, they have an amazing frontman who is bigger than the show itself." If AI is the future, TikTok is the present. What would you think if one of your songs went viral thanks to a dance or a teenage challenge?«The first thought is 'but do they pay me?' Does the fact that a song could be written by an artificial intelligence worry you? Is your job at risk?«The role of singers and shitty songwriters will disappear. And this is not so bad. 5 years is a long time in Noel Gallagher world. Fair enough, but I wouldn't think this would have changed since then unless he was angrier at Liam now than he was 5 years ago, which I doubt is the case. I think this video might actually be irrelevant since he was talking about the beginning of their careers not their current careers. |

Noel really seems to struggle with the fact he's nowhere near as popular as he once was.
Doesn't sound as if he wishes him well, and the final part is up for debate.
Noel's job might not be at risk, but hell he shouldn't talk about things he doesn't know anything about! Given time anything is possible!

Liam absolutely would not be shifting the tickets he is if he wasn’t playing Oasis songs. We all know that, we saw it with Beady Eye. But Liam doesn’t shy away from that, if anything he embraces it. The people want Oasis songs so he gives them it, making things like Knebworth 22 possible.
Noel also wouldn’t be selling as many tickets as he does if he wasn’t playing Oasis songs. But he still talks as though people are coming to see him play the High Flying Birds songs. And its a shame because some of his recent interviews where he seemed more upbeat were great.

I’m not saying his HFB stuff is irrelevant, there are some live highlights (If I Had A Gun, What A Life, Dead In The Water, In The Heat Of the Moment), just like Wall of Glass, Once and Why Me Why Not are often big at Liams shows. But here, it is almost like Noel is convinced the sole reason for his popularity slipping a tad is that his audience now only care for his post-Oasis work. The bottom line is yes, they both need Oasis songs for live appeal. It happens with tons of big acts whose members stay big. Paul needs Beatles songs, Sting needs Police songs, Morrissey needs Smiths songs. I guess Oasis is a bit of a one-off, as I can’t think of another time when two ex-members both had big solo careers doing the old songs live, and the one who didn’t write them ended up bigger live. So while I don’t buy into Liam somehow being less of man by singing them, I get why it may make Noel a tad bitter. |

Wasn’t it Colin Murray who said about TIOBI in 2005 that it “was so good it could have been a b-side in 1994”. DITW is so good it would have been a stand out album track in 2005. But not in 1994! |

He called Liam the best singer in the world then at the end said no one in Oasis was the best in the world at anything. He's said himself that he puts Oasis songs in because it's what the fans want to hear. That by his own admission is accepting Oasis is more popular and he isn't really writing stuff as good. If even your fans don't really want to hear it then I'm sure he knows. Liam should love quotes like this because it just shows who's winning. If that contest hasn't been handed to Liam already. |

Truth be told, Noel just does so many u-turns about these things nowadays that I don’t take it too seriously. I guess the difference between them is that Noel never avoided the old stuff live. While in contrast, Liam attempted a fresh start with Beady Eye initially playing no Oasis songs, and got a wake-up call. So hes perhaps got a better idea of how crucial the old songs are live. |
