I love Think of a Number, it's my second favourite after Dead to the World. But I find the lyric "Let's think of a number and I'll try to guess your name" to be really interesting for some reason. But I don't understand what he meant (other than the obvious reference to a 'magic' trick).
I know he references his marital issues in the song and what I interpret as his uncertainty during the pandemic along with calling for caution towards the media (The girl on the television, she got her magic eye on you, she'll sell you a dream, she's trying to fool the world).
But I would really want to understand the lyric itself. What do you think "Let's think of a number and I'll try to guess your name" means?
Also, the middle eight (or whatever it's called, that part where he goes "The truth won't hurt nobody") in the context of his divorce, musically and lyrically, is one of my favourite parts of the record.

Noel has mentioned he was surrounded by 'conspiracy nuts' during the pandemic. Sara's instagram was a hard follow during lockdown so maybe he's referencing that?

I took it as someone whose personality changes all the time and isn't the person they thought they knew. 'We'll play a game and try to guess who you are today'.
Then 'We'll drink to the future and hope it comes round again' is about pretending everything is OK but knowing it isn't and the end of the relationship is near

And it fits with the theme of the song.

We got on great, both able to get out to jobs semi regularly (I am a teacher, she was a waitress) and we're now married. I can see how a musician and his wife could be knocking about doing nothing. I am more talking about her views on vaccines and conspiracies

Doing nothing I mean, in a mansion, surely there are "things" to do Ok maybe not socializing to the max but Noel probably had his studio, a big garden, TV, a gym... It was hard for people living in a one bedroom apartment. Famous rich people have a tendency to whine a lot about everything. Anyway, people who believe those conspiracies are unstable from the start. Sad that Noel had to discover that in such a situation.
