Don't know anything about production but with the exact same instruments Hargreaves is performing here, it's interesting how 'tinny' it sounds here (i.e the same piano Bonehead used on the track) without the full thick wall of sound Owen Morris production. I know Noel hates the sound of Morning Glory album but his idea of production is far too clean. I do wish he'd see sense in the fact that those Owen Morris produced albums were THE Oasis sound. His latter production efforts (in addition to the original safe and clean Definitely Maybe recordings) just goes to show that if Noel were in charge of the sonics early on, the raging success wouldn't have been there regardless of the song quality. Hargreaves should focus on doing an appraisal on the importance of Owen Morris to Oasis success rather than getting bogged down in theories like The Masterplan being about the prophecies of a superior alien race coming soon to save us from modern pop or whatever. Producers are much more important than they're given credit for by the general public. As outstanding as they were as musicians and songwriters, would have The Beatles remained timeless 50 years after their breakup if George hadn't been their producer ? Same for Bowie without Visconti ? Pop music is a sport team. Morris indeed brought so much to those albums, not only in the production but also in the arrangements. For instance, this eerie mellotron part was his idea (he even played the higher octave part during the chorus). Coming back to Hargreaves, I think he also didn't play many of the more "obscure" tracks on Don't Look Back In Anger: the organ doing the harmony throughout, the ebow during the pre chorus, the mellotron (?) that plays a very similar melody to the vocal one but on a higher octave during the chorus, probably a couple of electric rhythm guitars tracks, etc All those elements helped to fill up the frequency spectrum a bit more, which in return, helped a bit to get that massive wall of sound The thing with older producers from thar era and before, like Owen Morris, Stephen Street is they didn't just produce records, the mixed them too, they were usually involved in the whole creative process right down to the mix. These days it's often different. Now it's usually producers and mix engineers on albums are two separate jobs. A lot of producers these days just sit in the studio and give guidance to the band in terms of direction, sound, arrangement but eventually it'll be sent off elsewhere to be mixed, often without the band or artist even present. Nothing wrong with that, there's some incredible mixers out there but I always thought the old school approach was better with guys like Owen Morris on morning glory who was the producer and mixed the songs, because they spend the time with the band, they have an understanding of how they want it to sound and they see it through right until the end. Surely the person building the song in the studio with the band from scratch would have a better idea of how the final mix should sound, rather than send it off to some Grammy winning mix engineer who has a conveyer belt of major label artists they're mixing from one day to the next. Anyway, all that said. That James Hargreaves cover sounds exactly like what it is. A band recorded by a studio engineer that knows how to operate the studio but not really a proper producer or mix engineer. So all the sounds are there and well recorded, but nobody has finished the job and mixed it sound like a proper record.

He should stick to the tabs and band stories.

I personally really like his channel. His guitar tab and features/stories videos are excellent. Highly recommend his video on The Seahorses, for example.
The problem is, he went 'viral' with his video on the 'secret' chord in Don't Look Back in Anger, got a load of subscribers, and thought rather than doing more of the same, he'd go after his childhood ambition of being a rock star.
There's a reason he didn't make it as a younger man. His songs aren't very good and neither is his voice. That's OK because his guitar playing and YouTube feature videos really are excellent.
Stick to what you're good at pal and don't throw good money after bad. Promote new young bands, by all means, but you're not destined to be a rock star I'm afraid. Keep up the great work on the videos.

The whole thing merely serves himself and he made it look as if it was his original thought and even responded to a video that Hargreaves claims 'stole' his theory. Yet the hypocrisy is shocking and shameless from Hargreaves. The reality is it was first publicised by georgiarose16 on YouTube years back, yet he never sought accolades or publicity. I'd rather give due respect to those Oasis fans who don't seek the limelight, who ask for nothing in return and who don't plagiarise others work and for that reason georgiarose is one of the finest.

Who knows, people thought that about all sorts of lunatics at one point. I think he's alright. Some of his videos are ridiculous and he clearly looks for theories that are not there, but that's OK, its only music and he's a very enthusiastic fan of the bands he covers. He seems a bit odd and awkward when he's interviewing people, but maybe that's just the kid in him that never expected to be talking to people related to the music he loves. I mean Maxi Gonzalez seems more of an oddball to me. His twitter his him writing about 6 tweets to Liam every hour. Obsessive behaviour that you expect from a 13 year old Taylor Swift fan. Liam has replied now and again like he does with others and that seemed to send him loopy and now he's writing tweet after tweet where he @'s Liam. I think I'd sooner have a pint with James

That was quite a hard read to be truthful. As a previous guest on his show and someone with a brain.... its clear to see some subjects are like headlines, to get exactly THIS happening. Imagine how many people watched after reading this thread. All a bit of fun and highlights the band brand. But as someone who quit their career to follow a passion too... you do get negative behaviours thrown at you from strangers...slag off the content. Not the human behind the screen. James is a nice fella. A lot smarter than you'd think too www.bittersweethome.co.uk

I dunno, maybe because I've been on the other side of the fence having to report someone to the police 13 times for online hassle. Not that ANY comments here are that serious but I just don't see the need to be negative unnecessarily, your comment is an opinion for example, all good and civil. Good on him for trying. No point getting to your deathbed and wondering what if... Anyway, bed time

My brother stumbled on YouTube and came across Hargreaves ‘music’ recently. I can’t repeat what he said about it... The biggest mystery is when I heard his DLBIA cover video. He went all the way to record it in Rockfield with Nick Brine, a full band (some even coming from Australia) trying to "recreate" the song and, I'm not a producer myself but to me, the result sounds not even mixed (!?) Was James not arsed to pay for the mix or was he "lied" to and the engineer just did the bare minimum ? Just seen this now. Alot of things wrong with this "studio" mix: 1) Drums sound terrible and boxed - also buried in the mix. No punchiness at all. 2) Guitars in the left and right channel sound off-beat and muffled. Can't even hear the bass. 3) Vocals sound dry and just stick out like a sore thumb. Overall the mix is airy and sounds more like a live rehearsal. I think Brine did the bare minimum like you said. I commend James for the attempt - but whoever mixed and mastered this didn't do him any favors.
