Former Manchester United manager Ron Atkinson is to make a shock return to football in a consultancy role at League One strugglers Swindon. Atkinson, who has been out of the game since losing a TV punditry job due to racist remarks about Marcel Desailly, will work with manager Iffy Onuora.
"It'll be great to be round a club again. It's been a long time," he said.
"I am not going there to do a Clive Woodward. Iffy is the manager and I am there when he needs me."
Swindon deputy chairman Mark Devlin added: "We hope that Ron's experience and contacts can help us stay in League One."
It was in April 2004, after Chelsea's defeat by Monaco in the semi-final of the European Cup, when Atkinson made an off-air remark about then Chelsea defender Desailly.
"I don't want to go there, I've apologised. End of story," said Atkinson. "I will put my track record up against anybody. Not just with footballers, but my record with people. It's gone, it's over, time to draw a line under it.
"Being called a racist annoyed me. It hurt me, but I'm not annoyed now. I understand what followed, I shouldn't have said it. I know that."
