NEW YORK (AP) - Johnny Damon gives the Yankees their first big-time leadoff hitter since Chuck Knoblauch was at the top of the order a half-decade ago - an era when New York won three straight World Series titles and four consecutive AL pennants.
Damon's decision to bolt Boston and accept a $52 million, four-year contract from the Yankees on Tuesday night also provides New York with a center fielder who covers a large amount of ground.
Details of the deal were still being negotiated and Damon must pass a physical, a baseball official said on condition of anonymity because negotiations were not yet final. The physical could take place Thursday, allowing the deal to be completed this week.
Moving from Fenway Park to Yankee Stadium will mean a change of style and scenery for the long-haired, bearded Damon - a fan favorite in Boston for his scrappy play and scruffy look. A razor is in his future because New York owner George Steinbrenner bans beards and long hair.

I just read the news. It's a business, what can we say? It's disgusting that he sold out a whole town like that. I hope djlen isnt out there somewhere writing his "goodbye cruel world" letter...
Might I take this moment to note, however, that Mr Paul Konerko turned down a bigger contract with LA to return to my ChiSox recently. ;D

Who, might I add, is the finest lead-off hitter in the majors. Yikes. I'm not going to listen to any foolish Damon interviews, or Henry press conferences, because it all means NOTHING. We all know it's ALL ABOUT THE $$$. With that said, couldn't The Sox have done better, or at least MATCHED the $52 mill that Damon will get from Steinbrenner? Come ON.

In all this talk about the yanks and the sox everyone seems to be forgetting who will really be on top of the AL east next season.
Seriously if the Jays can get a big bat then they will have an amazing team.

With outfielders, the legs are the first thing to go... if you notice most of Damon's big hits are with his legs... take them away *poof* instant .200, .220 hitter.

The Yankees don't help their cause any by singing Damon... he's an average fielder at best, and they don't add anything to their offensive lineup that they didn't have to begin with (a good lead-off hitter). Without a major revamp of their pitching staff (Big Unit and Mussina are aging and ridiculously more hittable now, Chacon needs about one bad game to be dusted for the month, and they've still got a hole to fill in the starting rotation, and their bullpen is a complete joke except Rivera) they won't be a threat to get past the first round of the playoffs again. If I were a Yankees fan, I would have just spent the money on a bullpen and another starter or two. I think my Sox and the Astros winning their respective pennants this year showed that the strongest teams can be built on great pitching.

Just my luck, the only authentic Red Sox jersey I own....yep, #18 Damon. Too bad, I thought he understood the only team he could go to and NOT still be adored is the Yanks. He's gone to the dark side The evil empire strikes again. Like I needed another reason to hate them.
Yankees Suck!

He's selling out Kevin... the hair and the beard are a part of what he is... and there his is on the TV yesterday telling Dan Roache from Ch. 4 that "the hair is starting to get in my way, time for it to go"... AMAZING what the $$$ can make people do. He was an ICON here... wait, didn't I say I wasn't gonna watch any Damon interviews?!? Fuck.

yankee haters of the world unite. Kind of weird how a lot of big names from the sox end up on the yankees later in their careers. Boggs and Clemens (via toronto). So i guess Damon isn't the first sell out. btw shadow only watches sports to perv on the players
