I've been listening to DGSS lately and I hadn't listened in years. I've always said it was a collection of Oasis rejects, and I still think that. BUT being an Oasis reject does not equate bad. We've seen this with even Noel's own rejects that he brought back later. But the problem is that some Oasis rejects were indeed bad and I think LAG wanted to put all the songs they wrote that they liked on this record, kind of like the first time you do groceries after you've moved out of your parent's homes and you buy some crisps and chocolate milk thinking "I'm free to buy whatever I, whatever I choose and I'll buy bad food if I want". So DGSS has great songs on it but also really bad ones that either should have been b-sides or simply never recorded (at least not in the form they were released). It makes for a very uneven record and I think they were also trying to even out the number of songs written by each member, which doesn't help. But the great songs shouldn't be dismissed. This is the kind of thing that is done to death in the other forums I know but now I'm doing it. I think that, if DGSS had had a bit more quality control to remove the fat, it would have been a great comeback for ex-Oasis members and would have shown a lot more people that LAG weren't just Noel's band but actual good songwriters and musicians (including Chris obviously). Here's how I would have put it. Note that I don't think all these songs are great, but a record of 100% great songs is hard to achieve for any band. I put an * next to those I personally find great. DGSS- Four Letter Word*
- Wind Up Dream
- The Roller
- Bring the Light*
- Man of Misery
- Wigwam*
- Kill for a Dream*
- Three Ring Circus
- The Beat Goes On*
- Sons of the Stage*
- The Morning Son*
B-Sides- Bring the Light/Millionaire
- Four Letter Word/Standing on the Edge of the Noise
- The Roller/World Outside My Room
Songs we should pretend never happened- Beatles and Stones
- For Anyone
I wouldn't do the same excercise with BE as I've always loved it as is EXCEPT for "Iz Rite" which should have been a b-side.

Agree with the sentiment. They needed a firm hand steering them and didn't have it, so it was a bit of a free for all in the way you point out. the album was too long.
however, my tracklisting would have been different - I think 'for anyone' is a great track, the only one that you can kind of hear is a steve lillywhite and the closest Liam has come to The La's. I wonder if it is a liam song?
Likewise 'Millionaire' and 'Standing on the Edge of the Noise' are two essential Andy and Gem songs for me. I'd definitely drop 'wind up dream' and 'man of misery' for those. would have had 'World Outside My Room' on the album too.
I think the end part of 'wigwam' was a great set closer, but the first part of the song dragged everything down.

I think the project came out very rushed and did not take the time to improve the product. I would build the setlist like this DGSS Four Letter Word The Roller For Anyone Bring the Light
Man of Misery
Wigwam*
Kill for a Dream* World Outside My Room The Beat Goes On Sons of the StageMorning SonB-Sides Wind Up Dream Standing on the Edge of the Noise Millionaire
Three Ring Circus Beatles and Stones

There was alot not to like about Beady Eye-the terrible name, the haircuts, the song titles. The painful retro 60's mod asthetic they were so intent on replicating. But musically they were a pretty tight beat combo(no surprise there)combined with Liam's voice.
The songs weren't terrible either-many at least as good as Liam's solo album track-which they could easily pass for.Cleary fans weren't ready for Liam singing in a band that wasn't Oasis-while being panned by Noel(once referring to then as the Baltic Drygoods Index)wouldn't have helped their fortunes.

I think the end part of 'wigwam' was a great set closer, but the first part of the song dragged everything down. I can kind of hear similarities to "There She Goes" in "For Anyone" so I get what you're saying. But to me it's just a weak tune. In comparison to Songbird, it's lacking a certain thing and I always found it really cheesy. But I'm sure it's a real Liam song. Three chords, simple words, it has his signature. Millionaire isn't bad but I wouldn't have made it an album track, let alone a single. I also found it cheesy. But to me Andy's songs were always hit or miss, there was no in between. Standing on the Edge of the Noise has great potential but I don't know if it's the production or the structure or I don't know but it came out bland, not unlike Hung in a Bad Place. But yeah they needed one of them or the producer to go "No this is too long" or "This song doesn't go on a record" and so on. Without Noel, they should have found someone else to do it because the artist is never the best judge. The difference between HC and DBTT is a great example of that. So maybe he did try to impose some quality control but was just shut down. There was alot not to like about Beady Eye-the terrible name, the haircuts, the song titles. The painful retro 60's mod asthetic they were so intent on replicating. But musically they were a pretty tight beat combo(no surprise there)combined with Liam's voice. Meh, I don't know about the fans not being ready for it. I don't think most of us really care about the haircuts and the names. Oasis was also a shit name, they had bad record names but, it was always more about the music and the gigs. They were a great combo indeed. Gem, Andy and Chris are talented musicians and Liam is Liam! But without the 'tunes' it doesn't go anywhere. As for Noel's influence on fans, that's part of my point. Beady Eye should have had a good enough record for it to not matter what Noel thought. But they were also a new guitar band in 2011 so they wouldn't have gotten any airtime and without the Oasis machine backing it up, there was nothing to push the music forward to people sadly. They were really badly represented.

Slightly off topic, but DGSS isn't available in Spotify Spain, is it the same in the rest of the world?

Well, I don't use Spotify but the album is still available on YouTube music I think. Infact the last I was aware it was also available on Amazon Music and Deezer. But I don't use those anymore, only YouTube.

They were really badly represented. This is it.
They should have changed management as it was obvious that Ignition were always going to be 'team Noel'. The only reason to have stayed is if they had carried on as 'Oasis' (which I think they should have - main songwriters have left bands before...)
I love Beady Eye. They are one of my most listened to bands. I kind of think of them as occupying the same space as Badfinger.
I think if Liam's personal life hadn't imploded they would have gone on to better things, although it would hsve been hard to turn the downward trajectory around.
some of the second album instrumentals are worth it on their own, really atmospheric stuff.
I really wish Liam would play 'start anew' live now, with the guitar solo that it always cried out for (and that andy was starting to do live by the end).

World Outside My Room is a great song and it's a shame that it was only a b.side. It deserved much more than that.

Maybe as a hidden track (they were kind of still a thing at the time) or a bonus track on iTunes or something like that. It's always been one of my favourites by Beady Eye. But sadly it was only a b.side and one of the bonus tracks on DGSS. It should have at least been a bonus track on the album.

One of the best things to come out of Beady eye era was this. Shame we don't have a soundboard recording.
