Hi. Just thinking out loud here.
When Tony did his book and used all the images of the band from Paul Slattery and Getty, I take it he didn’t need permission from Oasis/Ignition to use them? Just thinking with the whole Supersonic Guigs and Alan no show but film is a different ball game to photography.
They surely wouldn’t have helped him. And if he had permission from the copyright holders like Getty and Slattery he was good to go.
I posted a few months back saying I was working on a book on the NZ tour of 1998. I did reach out to Ignition but obviously got no reply. I found a couple of images of the Auckland gig and the copyright holder says they’re good to use and have been used in other books so I’m keen to use them if/when I get to the finish line. Newspapers have said the same that they own copyright and they can relicense to whoever for the right $$ ($$ being the problem for me haha)
I’ve found 91 people who went to either gig and have some great press material. But need to sort permissions. Work in progress. Lots of good stories from people at the shows.
Obviously my piece will be unofficial like the dozens of other books on the band over the years, but a zoom in on an unknown or forgotten chapter in the bands history

Obviously my piece will be unofficial like the dozens of other books on the band over the years, but a zoom in on an unknown or forgotten chapter in the bands history When making a film for commercial purposes (as opposed to for news or informational purposes), you generally need to get a release from every person who is recognizably featured.
Books are a bit different, though image rights vary a bit from country to country so it can get complicated. Of course copyright permission is essential no matter where you are and I'd make sure you get copyright permissions in writing very clearly stating exactly what rights you are being granted--and not just go off a verbal or off-hand comment. Easy to get in trouble that way.
Beyond that, when it comes to famous people, in the U.S. there is a differentiation between using photographs for editorial or news purposes versus using them for advertising purposes. You can't use images of people for advertising or publicity without their permission in most states. The cover of a book is considered advertising and you'd have to get express permission from the subjects. Inside the book if it's just a history of tours you can argue that is editorial. Obviously, any advertising for the book also could not use images of Oasis without the permission of the subjects.
But then these rules are different in the UK, so it's a mess often best left to lawyers. If you're working with a publisher, they'll get into this stuff with you. If you're self-publishing, you should read up up a bit on it (especially in terms of NZ law.)

Thanks. Yeah it’s hard to get my head around it all just yet. Flying solo at the moment, though I hope a publisher will take it on board.
NZ wise there isn’t anything on image rights and what I’m doing would be more editorial. Just the history of the band 1994-1998 in NZ via the press. Mags and papers have been good.
I was chatting to the NZ Herald photographer who took the one image which was on their front page, and he said the Herald own it as no waivers were signed. He said no NZ photographer would have gone if restricted in the end use of the material behind the papers. Issue is most of the material has been destroyed. No one kept the negs which is mental and the image in the paper is often what is left. The two used in a previous NZ gigs book are good to go as photographer is copyright holder and has already republished at least once.
Cover wise, would love an image of Liam. He is the main man.
Just thinking, with Richard Bowes book he must have licensed the image so may hit him up to see how they got around using that image.
USA is always too complicated. Ideally I can get to the finish line and publish in NZ to beyond Aus/NZ. Obviously UK is a target but I’d take getting it out in NZ as a win. It’s going to be very NZ centric with placing Oasis in the NZ scene at the time.
Just want to create a record of the tour to show they came here for current and future Oasis fans.

Sounds like you are on a good path. I would just get as many ducks in a row as you can before taking it to a publisher -- they appreciate it when the legal work is mostly done. It certainly never hurts to get permissions even if they prove unneeded! And then if you end up self-publishing you'll be ready to go.
Quality archival material is always tough to find 25 years on. But given how few Oasis books exist, I'm sure there would be some foreign interest in this if well done and especially if there are stories never heard before. Hope to see it myself one day!
