Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken of his relief after being told by police he will not face charges over allegations of rape.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) told the 20-year-old there was insufficient evidence to prosecute.

"I have been notified that the police investigation has been closed and no action will be taken," said Ronaldo.

"I have always strongly maintained my innocence of any wrong-doing and I am glad that this matter is at an end."

In their own official statement, United claimed they were not surprised the case has now been closed.

"The club has fully supported Cristiano Ronaldo throughout this difficult time and is pleased that the case has now been closed," it read.

The Manchester United winger was interviewed over the claims of a woman who accused Ronaldo of raping her in a London hotel in October.

He was quizzed last month after voluntarily attending a police station.

Looks like the gold diggers gave up!

It's such a shame, hundreds of celebrities are being accused of raping and all those worried parents believe it. Van Persie was the victim last summer and now it's Criz Ronaldo. Tomorrow it'll probably be Robben or Rooney. Seriously, why would they actually take time to rape someone, they can get hundreds of beautiful looking girls without much effort.
