Didn't want to add the title of the article to the post subject as it is a bit too heavy, There was an article published by Irish Times in 1997 titled 'Noel Gallagher is dead. here are the facts...'. It goes on to pick apart the events around 1996/7 to suggest that Noel died in a car accident and was replaced by a lookalike. Its feckin hilarious!!!

I was only 1y/o at the time, but does anyone remember if this was a widespread rumour or not?

Not. The rumour took on such a life of its own, and people now still make references to to Macca's supposed 'death' jokingly. Rumours spread to the extent word reached the Beatles business arm - the Apple company and Ringo responded to a radio query in the late 60s.

Lennon referred to it a line in his brutal, unpleasant character take down of McCartney in 1971's "How Do You Sleep" singing, in reference to Paul's dubious solo output thus far, "Those freaks was right when they said you was dead".
