Noel has mentioned a couple of times recently that his first experience with the guitar was trying to replicate Joy Division bass lines... And since I'm getting into JD right now and have an acoustic guitar that I've never used: is this an efficient way of getting a feel for the guitar?
I'm totally useless at playing any instrument and have never done so but I'd really love make the first step and to at least get a feel to how to play it.

Yeah totally. I'd say any method is good to learn how to play an instrument. Just learn the way you feel is best for you. Learning bass lines on guitar will help you master guitar solos and get a good rhythm in your fingers. Not so much to learn chords though. Try simple bass lines first on the E string. If you have an acoustic guitar that can be plugged into an amp, it's even better, put bass on ten and treble on 0, boom you have a bass guitar I taught myself the guitar playing along records. It's a good way to learn, but as i said, any method is good as long as you learn. Disclaimer: fingers may hurt at first on acoustic strings !

I'd recommend it too. I remember one of the first thing I learned on guitar was the bass line for Warning by Green Day.

I think I'm genuinly incapable of playing any instrument so my goal is first just to play through Songbird and eventually, perhaps, I'll be able to sing along as well.

I think I'm genuinly incapable of playing any instrument Let me stop you here. Anyone can play an instrument. You may not become Jimmy Page or Jimi Hendrix, but for basic strumming and singing, anyone can do it. Just need to practice and practice.
