Noel most certainly derived his brilliant dichotomy of a melancholic and yet simultaneously hopeful melody from this very song, (as well as from the Smiths). I’ve maintained this belief about Noel’s hallmark melody, and the link to Where Angel’s Play for well over a decade now.
A ‘chiming guitar riff’, with a ‘smooth drum line’, all ‘underpinned by the bass’, turning Where Angels Play into ‘a powerhouse’ and one that is ‘pop music at its best’, to quote a YouTube comment.
Stunningly beautiful. Most especially the shimmering outro. Easily ranks high on my favorite Stone Roses tracks. Really good performance too, mind.
Melancholic Hopefulness sounds like a good album title. Get on it, Noel.
