He's GOT to go for the win. Our performances lately have been so embarassing that anything less will be seen as further confirmation that he is unfit for his job.

you're right, but co-incidentally victory may be needed anyway to be top seed

England have already qualified for the World Cup - but they might need to beat Poland and then Argentina to be seeded for the finals in Germany.

Assuming FIFA use the same seedings system they used for World Cup 2002, England are just one point clear of Holland in joint seventh place with France.

So slip-ups against Poland in the final World Cup qualifying match and the November 12 friendly with Argentina in Switzerland could see them drop out of the top eight countries and end up facing Brazil, Argentina or Italy in Germany.

FIFA are likely to use a system which combines world rankings with performances over the last three World Cups - so failure to qualify for USA '94 still counts against England.

But more recently damning was England's defeat to lowly Northern Ireland that saw them drop to 11th from seventh in the FIFA world rankings.

Of the expected seeds, World Cup favourites Brazil lead on 64 points, followed by Spain (50), Mexico (48), Germany (47), Italy and Argentina (both 46). Then come England and France on 44 points - one ahead of Holland.

So, rather than resting easy against the Poles on Wednesday night, England might find themselves under pressure to win and avoid a difficult draw at the World Cup.
