I fucking despise Better Man on Heathen Chemistry’s album proper.
It sums up the worst of that album. Dull. Dirge. Bland. Beige. Uninspiring. Underwhelming. Shit.
But live? I keep coming back to this performance -
It’s fucking great: Stone Roses Second Coming + the Chug of Columbia.
And those riffs are brilliant.
Better Man is Better Live.

Better Man isn't the worst on HC. Of course, it has cringe lyrics but at least it has average instrumentals. It's average Liam song, nothing special.
But why everyone always forget that HC has the worst Noel song ever called Probably All In The Mind? THAT is speechless. The man who wrote The Masterplan and DYKWIM after seven years of amazing songwriting released 'Show me who you are / I'll show you what you love'. Absolute facepalm. I know it's marketing shit but when Noel called Heathen Chemistry 'second Definitely Maybe' knowing that album has Probably All In The Mind... I'd be ashamed telling that. Lyrically it's somewhere near Better Man. But instrumentally it's even worse - like farting right into my ears. It's a shame. Liam's voice made this song an absolute nightmare. Most Oasis fans call Nature Of Reality, The Quiet Ones or Ain't Got Nothing as the worst songs from the catalog. You're fookin' wrong. The right answer is Probably All In The Mind
As for Better Man... I quite like Liam's songwriting with his punch-in-da-face songwriting style. Live shows make them even better instrumentally. Better Man (dedicated to Bruce Wayne) from Finsbury with Alan drums is a massive energy

Again, like I Can See a Liar, I think it's great. Big fan. Just a shame the album version has got that shit instrumental at the end that makes it 28 minutes long.

I have the Japanese version of SOTSOG, might need to invest in Japanese version of HC!

I don't get the hate for Better Man, ok it's not one of Liam's best but it's not as bad as what some people make it out to be.

This early version of Better Man is the best one for me, instead of just a more casual jam ending someones playing the main riff during the end jam and it works well.

This goes for quite a lot of their work, its either hailed the greatest thing ever or its absolute shit. I don't think its that bad but the annoyance comes again when they have 20 b-sides before this that are all better (man). Sorry

Just my opinion I respect other people' opinions so that's alright. Some people can really like that song, personal opinion never should be, well, ashamed. Like, I personally think Meaning Of Soul is one of the strongest '00s song but truly understand people who mess it with all Jesus Christ sakes you've ever know. And that's okay - it's about respecting opinions. I just think PAINM is very safe and bland song for Oasis standarts. I tried to understand Noel's logic and didn't get far with it. 'Cause time has shown its nonsense - it never appeared somewhere. And that's the most honest fact about this song

Jonny Marr could have saved it with a face melting solo.

Sorry Yeah, there was some good Oasis b.sides around the Heathen Chemistry era. However, I've never really liked the b.sides from The Hindu Times single but the ones from the Stop Crying Your Heart Out I've always loved. But Thankyou For The Good Times should have definitely been on Heathen Chemistry instead of A Quick Peep if they really wanted to put a song written by Andy Bell on it.

I think for the first 2 albums Noel genuinely left off better songs through naivety and lets face it, nothing really suffered (apart from the later albums not having them songs). But i think by the 3rd album onwards he was purposely leaving off better songs to further the reputation for having these undiscovered gems. But he couldn't get away with doing that any more and everything suffered as a result.

True, and we all know how in the early days Noel would always put out great songs on b.sides even right up to Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, but then sadly the songs dried up and I think that Noel said that himself so as a result of that he got other members of the band to write songs which turned out to be some good and some bad. But I think that sometimes Noel would choose the worst songs written by either Liam , Gem and Andy and put them on on the album to make some of his own songs look good.

Not every song can be Champagne Supernova or The Masterplan, they can't all be absolute genius.
Noel set the bar so high in the beginning he's been beaten with it ever since.

Maybe but we all know that Noel can do so much better than writing shit like Put Yer Money Where Your Mouth Is, I Can See A Liar, She Is Love etc.

This thread made me realise I'd actually either forgotten or blanked out a lot of HC so decided to listen to it again and I know it goes without saying but MY GOD THIS ALBUM IS SHIT.
The scary thing is Better Man isn't imo even one of the worst songs on here lol.
FON, Probably and She Is Love are ABYSMAL. Somehow SIL is actually worse than I remember and I dunno what the hell A Quick Peep is about instrumental or not.
Hung in a Place is average at best and BOADC is good but flawed.
This is like an album by some shit pop group from the 90s or something, put out good singles which gets the public attention and deceives them into thinking they're buying a good album lol.

"For smoking all my stash and burning all my cash"
This from FON is not talked about enough in terms of woeful Noel lyrics from the 2000s!

To be honest I've always liked The Cage but I don't know why they decided to put it on Heathen Chemistry as an hidden track. Even if it wouldn't fit on the album they could've released it as a b.b.side on one of the singles from the album instead.

Gem's backing vocals spoil it for me in OPs video tbh. Shame as I think it would have been okay just LGNG. I love Gem though, wrote some of the best songs in Beady Eye
