NOEL & ARGUMENT MIDWAY THROUGH OASIS PERFORMANCE OF WHATEVER AT MAINE ROAD 1996
I actually really like this performance -
Their argument midway through Whatever epitomizes Oasis in every single way.
Oasis at their pinnacle. 1996. Maine Road. Attitude. Swagger. Coolness. Tension. Tambourine. Sibling Rivalry. Stella. PWOPA mad fer it crowd. Whatever - A classic non album track. Quintessential Noel & Liam argument. Liam fucks off and sulks mid performance. The band carries on without one of the Gallagher brothers. Harmonica player flicks off Liam. Octopus’ Garden ending.
I love this band.
And for the record.... Yes, Liam is way ahead of tempo.

He can hardly be blamed for being ahead of tempo when the rest of the gig is done at 1000x the tempo of the songs on record. Then they decide to play that at that pace.
It doesn't really get mentioned that much on here but it ruins the listening experience for me, in what was the pinnacle of Liam's voice they certainly didn't get the best out of him that often.

I'm not sure what's going on here, I think Harmonica player comes in early. Not sure what's going on with Liam and then Noel's vocal timing when he comes in is even worse. Disaster.

They were mesmerising whether things were going well or not.

This is something which I've never really thought about to be honest until now. But one thing's for sure it's not the best live performance of Whatever. As for the song itself I've always liked it but I'm glad that it was a stand alone single and I sometimes wish that Oasis did more stand alone singles than the two which they did between albums.

I must be in the minority but I like the faster pace of the songs.
The studio version eg of acquiesce is too slow for my liking

The studio version eg of acquiesce is too slow for my liking There's nothing wrong with doing it on songs like Acquiesce as you say, because that genuinely does give it more energy. But on a lot of songs like Wonderwall it just sounds so rushed like they are all compensating for not actually being that good at playing? I do'n't know, it doesn't make a for a good listen anyway.

I love that these guys are playing in front of 50,000 people and still act like they're jamming at the Boardwalk.
Liam came in early, but honestly, who cares? It sounded fine and all the musicians could've easily adjusted, in my opinion. Didn't seem something that Noel should've stopped the entire song over.
Hell, Noel came in (after he realized that Liam wasn't going to sing) at the chorus when the band and the orchestra were still playing the verse and they eventually adjusted.
I love the shot of Liam on the big screen smoking a cigarette. Got one of biggest cheers.

I also really love how Liam nonchalantly throws the tambourine over his shoulder in the beginning.
It’s quintessential Liam. He does not give a solitary fuck. I laugh every time I see this. Love this band lol 😂

I'd go with massive adrenaline rushes combined with whatever combinations of pills, potions, powders and liquids the band would consume before / during gigs is the reason why they race through gigs, certainly around this period anyway. I can't imagine playing to a click track was even mentioned at this stage in their career, not sure if it came in later or even at all.
