Rolo Can’t stop listening to them this week. I’m away digging out the demos and radio sessions now, thanks for bringing them back up! Glad this thread has brought them back to your attention mate! I'm in the same boat, can't stop listening to them still. Absolutely loving this one at the moment.

I've always thought - if there's a band with The La's legacy, no band, but The Coral. Not only Jaqueline, In The Morning, Dreaming of you, but this song got me really into them. I've seen them 4 times including supporting Oasis in 2005. Great band. Rolo, I don't know if you like them, but if not, give "Butterfly House" (album) a listen.

Butterfly House is a fantastic album with great songs, great playing (Lee Southall's lead guitar is incredible) and beautiful production by John Leckie - lots of layers and intricacies (listen closely for the bird that flew into the studio at end of Falling All Around You).
Its not as far out as their earlier albums but its a great listen.

Love a bit of The Coral, they've got some great tunes. Need to dig deeper in to their back catalogue a bit more though as only really know the singles.

I don't really get the hype. They are good but nothing amazing to my ears. They’re the ultimate rock and roll legend in so many ways: just that one near-perfect, timeless album that still jumps off the turntable with vitality 30 years later …plus enough mythology and mystery to last for generations. It takes some real magic to influence so many people in just 35 minutes, Noel and Liam Gallagher very much included. So that's the hype. Sometimes it comes down to what connects to your system, but it can't really be denied that they're a part of the Oasis DNA (though equally both bands were riffing off the same 60s bands.)

I would say all those bands like The La's and The Coral are the children of The Beatles if you know what I mean.

Anyone knows any good books about the band?
This is kind of the quintessential book because it's a guy who set out to find Lee Mavers and figure out what exactly happened to him ... a very La's story to tell:
or UK:
Synopsis: With timeless single “There She Goes,” Lee Mavers’ La’s overtook The Stone Roses as great British guitar hopes and paved the way for the Britpop renaissance of Blur and Oasis. However, since 1991, The La’s have been silent, while rumors of studio-perfectionism, madness and drug addiction have abounded with Mavers lined up as another rock casualty. The author sets out to discover the truth behind Mavers’ lost decade and eventually gains a revelatory audience with Mavers himself.

Damn The La's had it all-the world was at their feet if they even put the minimum effort in to play the game.Maver's was a star-looked great, charismatic and came across exactly how you'd want him to in interviews. In turns surly, cocky, hilarious or downright bonkers.Power was the perfect right hand man-a role he was better suited to than frontman it could be said.
Live the band all had good stage presence being more interesting to watch I'd argue than Oasis-who've always been a bit of a nothing burger visually.Into the bargain the three video's made by the band are also good-unlike the 'big O' who's by Noel's admission have always sucked.
The two NME interviews, five years apart are worth reading. In 1990 Maver's rubbishes the version of the album about to be released while also dismissing The Stone Roses citing Fool's Gold as their only song he rates.By 1995 seemingly plotting a comeback from their tiny studio with his latest incarnation of the band Maver's seems to have either lost the plot or is acting the part. The accompanying picture also shows him to have aged considerably in that time.
There's a hilarious 1min 37 youtube clip of the band miming a version of 'Feeling' from some euro music show with a great reaction from Mavers. I still dont know what 'Bibra' is...

How does Lee make money over the last 30 years? Serious question. They don’t sell a lot of records. They don’t tour. I doubt their music is used in a ton of movies or tv shows for royalties.

He probably lives a modest lifestyle, nothing too extravagant. Which along with the royalties for There She Goes makes it possible for him.

I Am The Key was probably the best unreleased song ever until it eventually came out in 2008 on a deluxe version of the album. Lee's voice on that track is magical and it's just a radio session. It would have been a killer single on a second La's album. Such wasted talent. It's a belter of a track for sure, but don't miss out these two either. And my personal favourite is Tears In The Rain. One of the most melancholy songs I've heard, somewhat closer to the eerie mystery of songs like Looking Glass. Unfortunately, having never been recorded properly they are only ever seem like fragments of soon to be great songs that never came to fruition. This lad does a great version of the latter though, coming close to what I imagine the song could have been like.

There were rumors (talked about in the book in Search of The Las) that he was working for a while as a painter, but also nobody knows other people’s finances. He could have invested his money from “There She Goes” well (and as others have mentioned, it does continue to provide income especially from synch rights to this day, it's been in many soundtracks), he could have other income sources (family member or partner for example), he could have a quiet job where no one knows (or cares) who he is. In any event, he obviously wants to keep his life private.

I don't really get the hype. They are good but nothing amazing to my ears. Exactly how I feel. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing really special for me. I've tried so many times but I don't get the "this is a near-perfect album" feeling. Timeless Melody is a very good song though.

Plot twist. Lee Mavers to appear in I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here later this year.
Seriously though, I wonder how many offers like this he's had over the years.
He's a fascinating character, it's such a shame he never released anything after 1990.

He's a fascinating character, it's such a shame he never released anything after 1990. The last article I read about Mavers the journalist said he couldn’t even begin to find him because he has no representation or agent, so I’m guessing not that many offers get to him, even if his name comes up. If you don’t play the game, the game usually ignores you. (That’s a compliment by the way – nothing is cooler than not playing the game if you’ve already achieved greatness.)

supported them at a gig, classic line up, really nice blokes all of them.
Saw them play a fair few times around the first album/there she goes - always seem to lack that rock'n'roll edge for me, like a skiffle group or something.

Or maybe he just didn't had it since the beginning. Who knows? I think the choice of producer(s) hindered the studio efforts, as seen by the various versions of tacks and perhaps they lacked a record co to stand by the 'vision' in the same way mcgee did for oasis?
plus of course mavers drug habits didn't help plot-wise.
