What do you think is Noel's best song lyrically? I think Cast No Shadow has to be up there IMO. I know he gets criticised a lot for his 'simplistic, cliched' lyrics by a lot of bias music fans that want nothing but to discredit him. What does everyone else think? What is Noel's best song lyrically?

Now that is a tricky one...
Some that immediately spring to mind are The Masterplan, Let’s All Make Believe, Cast No Shadow and maybe Go Let It Out. Struggling to narrow it down any further haha.
A personal favourite of mine lyrically is also Part of The Queue, but i wouldnt rank it as an objectively great one like you mean here.

Certainly think this has some of his most memorable lines.
''Come in a mess going out in style'' especially.

Always thought Gas Panic was his best one, it's personal, dark yet quite poetic and "and if there's a God woule he give another chancer/an hour to sing for his soul" has always been one of my favourite Oasis verses
But there's quite a few that stands out imo, as I've always said Noel can be a lazy lyricist and he's certainly not as literate as someone like Morrissey, but when he gets it right he manages to be very straightforward and relatable while also creating some kind of imagery Cast No Shadow, Half The World Away, Listen Up, The Masterplan, Rockin' Chair are all great examples of this Underneath The Sky and Idler's Dream are also not often mentioned but definitely amongst his best work

Oasis lyrics get panned, when in fact the messages sewed into their early output were very, very in tune with the times - even if the way they were presented was a little...fractured. www.goodreads.com/book/show/22070483-oasis-definitely-maybeI recommend this highly. I got it on Kindle but you can get paperback as well. Very probably the best Oasis book I’ve read.

Bring it on down:You're the outcast, you're the underclass But you don't care, because you're living fast. Shame most of the rest of it's pure Noel style gibberish, a lot of his songs have one killer bit like that, if it must be the whole song, the masterplan

The best for me are
"So here I go, still scratching around in the same old hole, My body feels young but my mind is very old. So what do you say? You cant give me the dreams that are mine anyway. Yer half the world away"
Simple and soulful and an incredible melody
"Wake up the dawn and ask her why A dreamer dreams she never dies Wipe that tear away now from your eye"
Nonsensical but evocative poetry
"Coming in-out of nowhere Singin' rhapsody Y'gotta be bad-enough to wanna be Sitting upside a high chair The devils refugee Is gonna be blinded by the light That follows me"
Nonsense but I like the imagery
"What tongueless ghost of sin crept through my curtains? Sailing on a sea of sweat on a stormy night I think he don't got a name but I can't be certain And in me he starts to confide
That my family don't seem so familiar And my enemies all know my name And if you hear me tap on your window Yer better get on yer knees and pray panic is on the way
My pulse pumps out a beat to the ghost dancer My eyes are dead and my throat's like a black hole And if there's a god would he give another chancer An hour to sing for his soul
Captures the paranoia, darkness and hopelessness of kicking addiction
"Who kicked a hole in the sky so the heavens would cry over me? Who stole the soul from the sun in a world come undone at the seams?"
Let there be love gets hate and I dont love it, but i always thought this was a nice and earnest little stanza.
"I lost my faith in the summertime, 'cause it don't stop raining. The sky all day is black as night, but I'm not complaining. I begged my Doctor for one more line, he said "Son, words fail me!" There ain't no place to be killing time, I guess I'm just lazy."
The closest Noel's ever come to actual storytelling. Nice Kinksy retro vibe going on
"I tried to talk with God to no avail Calling my name from out of nowhere I said "If you won't save me, please don't waste my time""
Hes hardly Thom Yorke or Morrissey but he can conjure up some great evocative nonsense that seems profound even if its not

"Dead In The Water" kinda falls into the category of simple yet effective songwriting that Noel can muster up if he's arsed. I like how he flawlessly intersperses the usual love song sweet nothings with maritime themes.
