I’m not talking lyrics to an entire song, I’m not talking about multiple lines of lyrics.
What I am talking about are segments of lyrics. I could parse through individual lines all day with this band. Noel is incredibly creative with words, and it is often under noticed.
“We live a dying dream” -
this is a great example - live, dying, and dream all contradict each other, yet this segment makes total sense and can be interpreted in many different sensical ways. There are hundreds of these. Noel is a fucking genius.

"Step off the train all alone at dawn..."
DYKWIM is filled with great lines, but this one doesn't get mentioned nearly enough. A fantastic, atmospheric start to both a song and an album. Cool as fuck with that melody and Liam's jagged vocals.

I've said it many times, Noel can be very lazy with lyrics, and he's not as articulate and poetic as someone like Morrissey nor as argute as some of his peers, but he's certainly got his own way with words
Don't know if it would count as underappreciated, but I've always loved the "...in the morning rain/as it soaks you to the bone" in Live Forever, it's like while you listen you are actually freezing while it's pissing and you're walking in the cold with no one around, you can *feel* it

"Nobody ever mentions the weather could make or break your day" is a great line too

Most of Noel's attempts at explicitly romantic lyrics leave me cold, but If I Had a Gun is an exception, and in particular "Lay your body next to mine" is a great and evocative line.

I agree with you, though the line I really like is 'Excuse me if I spoke too soon, my eyes have always followed you around the room.

Didn't walk, could've run Ain't that enough? Feel alive out on a limb The same way as up I wanna be where we as people should be I wanna see what's not shown
Could've won, should've lost And laid down in sun Change of mind, change of line Under my tongue I wanna go where we as people should go I wanna know what goes on
Never really got those lyrics, but when it hits you, wow. Gem is such a underrated songwriter. It's time that Gem starts writing songs for NGHFB if you ask me.

I almost put that line, too, and then wondered if maybe it was cheating to put a line that gets repeated. But yeah, that's a great line not just for the words but where it fits in the melody.

I slip my skin as the prophets reappear. But I paid no mind. I’m just trying to persevere.
I think SOTSOG would’ve been better received if Noel had just come out and admitted half the songs were about being on a comedown and basically getting the fear.

I've always liked 'I carry madness, everywhere I go' and 'If you see me and I look right through, you shouldnt take it as a reflection on you' in Turn Up The Sun. Perfect for Liam to start an album with.

Perfect for Liam to start an album with. I can't be doing with this one. Reeks of someone trying to write for a caricature of the band, when that type of attitude is clearly not them. Noel could get away with writing "Kicking up a storm, since the day that I was born" in '97 because at that point he was a coked-out superstar with a Rolls-Royce and a stalker, who could spin out generational anthems almost as an accident. But Andy Bell writing it? In 2005? Nah.

Take me walking, to where you played when you were young. That line has always conjured up images of that special time when you first meet and are getting to know someone. Simple but effective.

"I can't tell you the way I feel Because the way I feel is, oh, so new to me"
Not the most profound lyrics but they always sound so incredibly cool. And while it is about drugs, I think you can apply it to other situations too.

You and I will live and die, The world’s still spinning round, we don’t know why.
I think that’s actually really poignant and completely overlooked.

For such a simple song (if you will), Wonderwall has strong lyrics.
And all the roads that lead you there are winding. And all the lights that light the way are blinding.
That’s a sentiment I can echo exactly and is why I created this thread - so many overlooked lyrics. Or perhaps it’s my nihilism and ever growing existential crisis shining through.
