I love Alvvays! Thank you for this thread, lubeck . Saved by a Waif is my favorite from them by a country mile. I have no clue how they did not release this song as a single. That intro is filled with wondrous anticipation and the verses work through those feelings in the context of young love and the pre-chorus & chorus take on those emotions with the snag it may take in life, and the bridge works through it all. The chorus is amazing, the chord progression is fantastic, the guitars in the bridge sound cool, and it's just an all-around great song. Followed by Archie, Marry Me, Next of Kin, Dreams Tonite, and Atop a Cake. This band takes on a modern indie sound with songs for a young generation stuck in debt and looking to live while they're still young, before they have to shape up. As someone in that generation, I relate closely with this band (also Molly Rankin has a beautiful voice and is a darling).

Funny how all the songs you mentioned were ones that ended up being left out from my own list. That's 10 songs being favourites from a band that's released only two albums. I voted for Adult Diversion, Party Police, Ones Who Love You, Not My Baby, Lollipop (Ode to Jim [Reid]). I love Archie too but I've definitely listened to those five more lately. Also both Dreams Tonite and In Undertow are in my top-4 scrobbles on last.fm

I'm really surprised it's their most streamed song actually.

You're missing a song here, Lubeck! There's also the beautiful MBV-esque Underneath Us that was a Japanese bonus track on the first album.
I went with Adult Diversion, Archie Marry Me, In Undertow, Not My Baby, and Saved by a Waif. Pretty surprised Not My Baby doesn't have more votes. I can hardly think of a better salty my-ex-was-an-asshole-and-I'm-glad-to-be-rid-of-that-piece-of-shit song. Plus I've alvvays also interpreted that song as a celebration of artistic freedom as well.
Also want to second Saved by a Waif as super underrated. Incredible chorus and a brilliantly weird guitar solo. Honorable mention to Your Type and Hey both of which are absolute riots live in a way that doesn't come across on the record.

Also, if I were the moderator of an Alvvays forum, I'd have a script that auto-corrected every instance of "always" to "alvvays".

Voted for Saved By A Waif.
Alvvays are really good fun, just brilliant straight up pop.

Just see that Alvvays has two songs around 40 millions streams on Spotify (and I'm almost not even in those figures ). Impressive numbers. I thought the band was less known.

Pretty much everyone I know who considers themselves a fan of indie music is aware of them. They've grown a lot in stature over the last few years, that's for sure!

I think it's quite a north american and british thing though. Last time they toured in France, they played at "Le Trabendo" which is a less than 1000 people capacity (Yeah I know, France ). But in North America and UK they do seem pretty established as an indie big name. Btw, do you think we'll get a crossover track on the next album ? "Archie, Marry Me" and "Dreams Tonite" are to some extent, but I wonder if they can take it to even another level of popularity. I think Molly Rankin's melodies have an universal feel that can convert people who aren't necessarily fans of jangle/dream pop.

Interesting that Dreams Tonite seems to have become the crossover track from Antisocialites - bc imo In Undertow is a far stronger song that sticks in my head much more, and is far more indicative of the leap in maturity both in terms of songwriting and perspective btwn their debut and their second.
I hope that they have another song that makes them even more popular! Unless there is an unexpected backlash I can't see them getting any less popular. But I do think that it's interesting that these days there aren't so much crossover tracks as much as people seem to be aware of a much greater range of musical styles than they used to be in the past. That may be just my impression but I do think there's something to it. So perhaps if their next single is a hit, it will somehow permeate into everyone's collective consciousness anyway.

English not being my first language, I only realized a few weeks ago how good and kind of sophisticated some of Alvvays lyrics are.

So, what are your thoughts on the new album ? I've listened to it a few times, and I think it's not as good as the first two albums, while still being a fine record in itself. Many Mirrors is probably my fav on the record for now.

I haven't listened to it yet... still waiting for a free evening, with a cold beer and headphones at full blast The singles were good but my expectations were higher.

Well, the album really has grown on me. Belinda Says is fantastic, the break where it's only Molly's vocals with layers of strings is absolutely gorgeous. It might lack a killer single, but it's maybe their most cohesive album from start to finish. Let's just hope they will not take 5 more years to release a 4th album (even though the reason why this album took so long to record has nothing to do with them and really sucks)

Woah, this one sounds more like The Smiths than many Smiths songs The guitar tone and licks are pure Johnny Marr and even the lyrics sound very Morrissey!

I never noticed before how important the Korg is to their sound. That's probably why I love their first album the most, Korg is quite prominent on that one. Very cool little vid. matt carlober
