This has probably been asked before but I was watching Earls Court and reminded how amazing liams voice was in 95. I know Noel was hesitant to let Liam sing wonderwall (Noel didn’t want to give up his baby) until 96 but does anyone know if he ever performed it live prior to Maine Road? Thanks!

Wonderwall was played for the very first time at the backstage of Glastonbury on 23rd June 1995, acoustic by Noel. From 10th Janauary 1996 at Vredenburg in Utrecht, Wonderwall was added to their setlist in Noel's acoustic set. The Point gig in Dublin on 23rd April 1996 must be the first time Wonderwall was sung by Liam. I could be wrong, so would you kindly confirm it, guigsysEstring, davidjay?

On the subject of "Wonderwall", it seems there are only two people who can sing this tune right: Liam and Noel in the 90's.

Wonderwall was played acoustically by Noel during the fall 1995 tour in the US, so its addition to the setlist pre-dates the Utrecht gig in 1996. Specifically, I know that it was played on October 14th, 1995 here in Boston. There is also the famous MTV Ultimate Winter Vacation event from December 1995 where Noel plays Wonderwall with Alan on drums as Liam sits there and just plays the tambourine. I am not sure about the first performance with Liam on vocals, but it is definitely some time in 1996, as Noel has said that they struggled for a long time to be able to play it as a full band without playing it too fast, so I would suspect that they needed a bit of time off from touring to rehearse it out before adding it to the set list.

In the 90's Noel ruined a lot of good songs by singing him instead of Liam... Wonderwall, Live Forever, Slide Away, Whatever... he should have let them sing always and only to Liam. Listen what a wonder here!

On the subject of "Wonderwall", it seems there are only two people who can sing this tune right: Liam and Noel in the 90's. I think it embodies what makes the song great. The composition, for one, but the spirit of it. It's a love song but it's rough around the edges and is enveloped in a special time, sort of like how the initial stages of falling in love are, but not in the sappy sort of way that so many other artists have embodied their love songs as. The '90s were a beautiful time for the band being some lads from Manchester and that spirit and excitement was all there when the song was written, recorded, and produced, and performed live at around the time, which can never be recaptured again... Really I think that makes it the quintessential song from the band's golden age.
