The Arctic Monkeys don't get a lot of love on this forum and I'm not sure why. In my honest opinion, Turner is the best song-writer since Noel and the Monkeys are the biggest and best band still active. I think every album has been different and they have evolved their sound. Their next album will more than likely be completely different once again.
Explain your answer - why is it your favourite and what came close?
For me, it has to be FWN. I adore that album, it contains 2 of my favourite tunes (505 and Flourescent Adolescent) and it just sounds mega to this day.
AM, which I expect will be a popular choice, is a bit too poppy for me and has too much filler (I want It aAl, I Wanna Be Yours, Fireside, Mad Sounds). I'm also a big fan of Suck It and See which came close to being my favourite. Love the moodiness of that album.
Also, if you aren't a fan, why not?

AM is their only good one, so that.
They just seem like a group that in a more prosperous time for British indie would have been a decent band of also-rans. The fact that they only have to be better than shite like Catfish and the Bottlemen to headline stuff makes them seem more stand-out than they are. Also sick of hearing of what a great lyricist Turner is when an awful lot of it is just "household saying + teen love". Just come out with stuff like "Is your heart still buy-one-get-one-free?" and people will consider it genius. Still, what a tune this is:

The band portrayed in 'Fake Tales of San Francisco' is basically what Arctic Monkeys themselves had become on AM. 90% of it is undeniably shite.

Favorite Worst Nightmare.
Hotel & Casino is the most boring thing I have heard in my life. And I used to listen to Coldplay!

If you asked me a few years ago I would have been all over that first album. However, I've had FWN in my car for about a month now and I can't get enough of it! Such a great record. I'm sure it will change, I like humbug a lot too. Anything after is a bit hit and miss

Haven't heard any of them but it's gotta be Humbug. That has the most fun title.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino Easily. Pure genius.
I’m more of a last shadow puppets fan, though. Should have been a TLSP record really.

Absolute genius. The first album is one of the best albums of the past 20 years, for me. Absolute perfection.

And those guys were not even 30 yet right ? Too bad those records are overlooked by the AM fame. I like the AM records too, but they dont touch those two musically.

I try to respect other peoples musical opinions but i really cant fathom voting for Tranquillity Base Hotel & Casino; Whatever People Say I Am was the first album i listened to in full and really liked every single song on it, so when AM teased Tranquillity a year or two ago i was quite interested but was hugely disappointed when it came out. I understand that its theme is supposed to be a bit out there but beyond the catchy chorus of 4 Stars Out Of Five everything sounds so off like the rhythm and singing don't match up one bit.

Tranquility base is masterpiece especially because of that : words make the changes, not chords. They're not structured as any other pop songs, when before, AM had overly structured songs, mathematically structured. That's probably why their "older" fans dont like that album, because you have to completely forget what they were before, and make your brain forget. It's like learning a new language.

I’d say each album they’ve released gets worse, I used to really like them as I saw them pretty often before they got big, but their last album was terrible. I’m all for bands trying something different and moving in different directions but just wasn’t for me I’m afraid. I saw them a couple of year ago again and the old songs still sound great and I don’t mind the odd song from their other albums but the new stuff I just don’t get and you really can’t get much better than their first album for me. Can remember seeing them in a small pub in town when they were just starting out, only cost me £3 a ticket as well.

There is something about AM which doesn't click for me, I mean the singles are great and there are some cool songs too, but overall it always felt a bit superficial and calculated for me, it didn't help Alex started to mock Elvis stance at the time and that was so fake, even if it grew a bit on me over the years AM still a bit off for me.

For me probably between TBH&C or AM for me. One of those rare bands that haven't done a bad album for me and get better with each release. That last album was a pretty ballsy album to come back with after the huge success of AM. Turner doesn't get near enough acclaim he should do. Helder's is a top drummer too.
1. TBH&C 2. AM 3. Humbug 4. WPTIATWIN 5. FWN 6. SIAS

That's why I admire them most, they could have gone down the route of writing the same songs and they might have kept that fanbase. But they did their own thing, and it's worked for them. Each album doesn't sound the same and they don't even look the same. I was in my 20's when they first came along, they were breath of fresh air and still to this day they are still one of those rare bands you actually look forward to them releasing stuff.

I recently found out that The Bad Thing is considered the worst track on FWN by most of the fans. Apparently Alex was the only one who wanted to include it on the album and the rest of the band agreeded only if they didn't had to play it live.
I found this quote on another forum:
Which AM song is the most criminal?
Jamie: 'The Bad Thing.'
Alex: 'Yes, yes, clearly. But that one's dead and buried.'
I didn't expect it as it's one of my favourites on the album and quite similar to their debut sound. I know they have some good b sides that could've been on FWN but I think The Bad Thing is such a perfect song for that spot between If You Were There Beware and Old Yellow Bricks.

It's still Whatever People for me, one of my favourite albums of all time, I love its energy and the smart storytelling But I love FWN and Humbug very much too, in different ways After that it went a bit downhill, not that anything they've come out with is bad, but from Suck It And See onwards they just don't get me the same way
