Back when they were happening I thought it made Oasis unique that they had acoustic sets with just the guitarist and songwriter and not the lead singer.

Now I'm wondering if that format was inspired by a prior act that they liked or was it even common practice?

I don't think it was inspired by much of anyone, though someone had probably done it before hand. I think the story was that Liam didn't turn up for a gig and Noel had to do an acoustic set. He discovered that he liked doing it and it became tradition.
