I hate to say it but they probably should have broken up around 2006. That 3rd album was lifeless overall. But that would mean no Angles and that would be bad. It’s better to burn out than to fade away....

Heard that "At the Door" track. Abysmal.

Heard that "At the Door" track. Abysmal. You were making bad desicions about which new song should you listen first.

I liked Angles way more enjoyable than Firts Impressions. The party was over after Room On Fire. These things happen. Pretty much agree with this, the first two albums are fantastic stuff. Could have made a very good single album out of their best stuff from the last three albums. I think they will always ride on the wave of been the band who got guitar music back on track and Is This It will always get them a pass with a lot of people. I think a lot of the other bands around that time like The White Stripes for example went on to release better stuff.

At the Door is great. Bad Decisions is good, but too nostalgia friendly for me.
Angles had its moments, as did Comedown Machine. Think this album could be excellent again.

Comedown Machine was a great album IMO and quite different to the rest. That keeps me from writing off the new stuff even if expectations are pretty low.
For me The Strokes will always be untouchable for those first 2 albums and their place in history is cemented for the impact and influence they had.

I'll be honest, I never got it with The Strokes. Meh. The first one is pure magic, like a best of. I sometime wonder of they really wrote it... I think i was listening to it ten times a day when it came out. In the middle of the ploddy coldplayesque era it was like a Breath of fresh air Also the soundtrack (sadly) to 9/11. Weird Times before the new weird Times of today.

A bit like with The Libertines I suppose - it was just a bit too soon for me. The first big British band I remember coming through was the Arctics, that album came out when I was 10 and I remember the hype because of the whole MySpace thing and stuff. American Idiot was the first album I bought and I'm not even ashamed to say Green Day the first band I really got into (though thank God I never went down the full punk/goth route ). My Dad has said the new Strokes album is great so I'll have to give it a listen.

I decided to listen to the Strokes debut again the other day and it somehow always surprises me. If I were less of a hipster type I'd say it's my top-5 albums ever. But since it's "just" indie rock I find it hard to include in these lists I quite liked this new album but at the same time I have no recollection from any of the songs after a single listen...

There’s tons of bands that I love that were dead and gone before I was born (« just few » years before you 😂) so it’s probably not an age thing. Music is timeless (good music is) I can see why people don’t like the strokes. More than any other band. It sounds messy and half done at first. If you don’t like garage music don’t bother. Albert Hammond jr records are more polished and he’s got some good tunes.

It was a great move when they began to experiment with synthesizers cos it suits them really well, also I love those 80's synth sounds btw, a time when synthesizers sounded like sythesizers.

Their best album since First impressions of Earth and their most even album since Room on fire. I really like it!
My ranking:
1. Brooklyn bridge to chorus 2. Selfless 3. Ode to the Mets 4. Bad decisions 5. Why are sundays so depressing 6. Not the same anymore 7. The adults are talking 8. At the door 9. Eternal summer
1-4: Instant favorites 5-6: Grew on me into favorites 7: Pretty good 8-9: Okay

I finally got around to listening to it this week. Not bad. Some pretty good moments on there, some are decent, and there’s two I can’t enjoy. Selfless seems like a somewhat more colourful outtake from the last album which sounded dry as cardboard, and At the Door is at times painful to get through.
I liked the first track (Adults) right away, good grove restrained but tight. Eternal summer also and Brooklyn Bridge was a standout too.
The rest falls somewhere in the middle. I’ll listen to it again on Friday.

To be honest I've never really liked The Strokes much. Their first album is ok but that's all I've actually liked by them.

I have recently given this another listen. I definitely think this is their best effort sine 1st Impressions Of Earth - Which I loved for the record!
Currently blasting out Ize Of The World.
This new album is still a bit forgettable though and not 1 I'll go back to very often.

I think it's excellent from start to finish. Sounds like they're enjoying it, tunes are there, they're not just doing Strokes by numbers (Bad Decisions is a banger but At the Door is great), Julian's shite tendencies (The Voidz can go straight into the fucking sea) are reined in and it's just great to have them back.
