Glenn McGrath arrived at Edgbaston expecting to wreak havoc against the England batsmen.

He left in a taxi to hospital after suffering a bizarre injury that ruled him out of the second Test.

The Australians were warming up for the game with a spot of touch rugby when McGrath stepped on a stray cricket ball and damaged his ankle.

The bowler is not the first sportsman to pick up an injury in strange circumstances - we have selected a few of our favourites:

Derek Pringle
The former England all-rounder sat down to write a letter on the eve of a Test match, leant back on his chair and put his back out.

Don Topley
Pringle's old Essex team-mate damaged his hand on a spring-loaded letterbox while delivering a letter to a friend.

Rio Ferdinand
Watching telly can be a risky business, as the England defender found out during his time at Leeds. Ferdinand had been reclining for a number of hours with his foot up on a coffee table and injured a tendon behind his knee.

David James
The goalkeeper also found out too much TV is bad for you when he pulled a muscle in his back after reaching for a remote control.

Alan Wright
The former Aston Villa full-back was not the tallest of defenders and his lack of inches led to a strained knee when he tried to reach the accelerator in his new Ferrari. He later swapped the car for a Rover.

Chris Lewis
The England all-rounder decided to give himself a snazzy new haircut during a tour to the West Indies and shaved his head. Soon afterwards, he got sunstroke.

Richard Wright
The Everton keeper fell off a ladder while putting his suitcases in the loft after a summer break in 2003 and damaged his shoulder.

Dave Beasant
The former England stopper indulged in a bit of fancy footwork to try and control a falling bottle of salad cream. Sadly he managed to rupture ankle ligaments and was ruled out of action for two months.

Steve Morrow
Tony Adams hoisted his Arsenal team-mate in the air to celebrate their 1993 Littlewood's Cup win. Unfortunately he dropped him, breaking Morrow's shoulder.

Darren Barnard
Puppies may be sweet and cuddly but the former Barnsley midfielder certainly did not think so when he slipped on a puddle of his doggy's urine and suffered torn knee ligaments.

Colin Montgomerie
The Scot pulled out of the Open at Sandwich in 1993 after just seven holes following an incident on the way to breakfast. Montgomerie was amazed it was raining and as he looked to the clouds, he fell over a step, suffering a swollen right wrist and badly bruised knees.

Ted Dexter
The former England cricket captain once broke his leg after his own car ran over him.

Sam Torrance
The former Ryder Cup skipper has had a series of accidents in a colourful career and almost missed the matches at the Belfry in 1993 after an incident at the English Open. He managed to fracture his sternum after tripping over a flower pot while sleep-walking.

Ian Grieg
The term accident-prone was invented for this unfortunate cricketer.

The former Sussex and Surrey player broke his ankle after falling from an upstairs window while trying to break into his own house.

Not long after his return to action, he was hit on the finger by a Pakistan bowler and taken to hospital for an X-Ray, which revealed a break. As he got up, he hit his head on the X-Ray machine and needed two stitches. Priceless.
