Still cannot fathom how somebody who had the ability to write such beauty with sensitivity has become so toxic in recent years. It's the old dilemma - art or artist but I just can't reconcile the wordsmith of The Smiths with his public persona, and I'm always looking at Morrissey the artist of The Smiths rather than anything else.

I still listen to The Smiths and am as avid a fan of them but it's a shame to look at all those images with him and Johnny and think what he has become.

Christ he's been saying that about all his albums since 2004. I recall reading his 'rankings' from a few years ago of everything he had done, including The Smiths. He had what was then his three most recent albums - Years of Refusal, Ringleaders of the Tormentors and You Are The Quarry - as the three best he'd done. Meanwhile all Smiths albums were middle to low ranking.
