So the idea is to make the chronology of Noel's songwriting in Oasis. The goal is to see Noel's evolution as a songwriter. 1992 Whatever (March) ? Hello (March) ? She's Electric (March) ? All Around The World (March) ? 1993 Supersonic (19 December) 1994 Some Might Say (July/August) ? (It's Good) To Be Free (October) ? Talk Tonight (October) 1995 Acquiesce (March) Don't Look Back In Anger (April) Cast No Shadow (May) The Masterplan (August) Underneath The Sky (October) I'm tagging The Crimson Rambler who knows probably more than me about this.

I've got tonnes of information on this (mainly between 91-97) but as I've right now I'm taking a break from researching it. I'll happily clarify any individual songs for you if you want?
For example from the songs you've selected these are the correct dates (I haven't narrowed them down too much because I'm trying not to base anything off speculation but actual information):
Whatever (Late 1992-Early 1993. I'm more inclined to say the latter) (It's Good) To Be Free (Early to mid 1993) Hello (Mid to late 1993) She's Electric (Mid to late 1993) All Around The World (Mid to late 1993) Supersonic (19 Dec 1993) Some Might Say (Early-Mid 1994) Talk Tonight (Sep/Oct 1994) Acquiesce (Mar 1995 (Based off an earlier song from 1993 called 'Being a Blue')) Don't Look Back In Anger (Apr 1994) Cast No Shadow (May/Jun 1994) The Masterplan (Aug 1995) Underneath The Sky (Oct 1995)
It seems Noel didn't really come into his own as a songwriter til late 1992. A lot of material discussed as being from 1992 actually comes from 1993. For example that video of the band at the boardwalk playing 'AATW' is from 1993 not 1992.

I would like to know at least for all the 90's songs but I'll understand if you don't want to do that now ! Oh and do you know what's the oldest song Noel has written to appear on an Oasis release ?

No worries pal. Those 3 songs were definitely all written in mid-late 93 with nothing I can really think of to seperate them. In terms of what was the oldest written song to feature on an Oasis release I'd say: - In terms of music it's 'Columbia'. It was first performed as an instrumental in Jan 1992 and then lyrics were added by Chris Griffiths (of The Real People), Liam and possibly Noel in Spring 1993. - In terms of a complete song it was probably either 'Cloudburst' or 'Alive' which likely date from 1992 though the evidence is scarce. There are other songs in contention but I'd put my money on these two being the oldest. - If you mean in terms of being released on an LP I'd say probably 'Rock N' Roll Star' or 'Bring It On Down' which were likely written in late 1992 (5 Jan 93 being the latest possible date), though 'Up In The Sky', (maybe) 'Digsy's Dinner' and (to a lesser extent) 'Married With Children' are in contention. Here's a simplified timeline of when the Definitely Maybe/WTSMG?/Be Here Now album tracks were written: 1) Columbia [Instrumental] [Late 91/Early 92]2) Rock N' Roll Star/Bring It On Down/Digsy's Dinner [?]/Up In The Sky/Married With Children [Late 92/Early 93]3) Columbia [Spring 93]4) Live Forever [Mid 93]5) Cigarettes & Alcohol [Mid 93]6) Shakermaker/Hello/She's Electric/All Around The World/Don't Go Away [?] [Mid/Late 93]7) Supersonic [Late 93]8) Slide Away [Late 93/Early 94]9) Roll With It/Hey Now!/Some Might Say/Stand By Me [Early/Mid 94]10) Champagne Supernova [Late 94]11) Morning Glory/The Girl In The Dirty Shirt [?] [Late 94/Early 95]12) Don't Look Back In Anger [Early 95]13) Wonderwall/Cast No Shadow [Early/Mid 95]14) My Big Mouth [Late 95/Early 96]15) I Hope, I Think, I Know [Early 96]16) It's Getting Better (Man!!)/D'You Know What I Mean?/Fade In-Out [Early 96]17) Be Here Now [Mid/Late 96]18) Magic Pie [Late 96]

My guess is the actual song was written later that year/early 1995

I think I remember someone talking about it on here but upon listening to it I couldn't hear any 'Hey Now!' in it. Maybe I just skip 'Hey Now!' too often and aren't familiar enough with the instrumental but if you could timestamp me the parts which are similar I'll give them another listen. Now if this were to be certifiably true it'd be kinda important as it'd give Noel's 1994 notepad a much needed starting date, as 'Hey Now' almost certainly features on it's earliest page under the title 'Feel No Shame'. However can you definitively say the track evolved from the 'jam' or did the 'jam' just incorporate bits of a then unreleased track? Regardless the track was written pre-'Champagne Supernova' which came together in late 94.

Regardless the track was written pre-'Champagne Supernova' which came together in late 94. It supposedly has bits of it. The best I can tell it is similar to the chorus, but it also sounds a bit like the live versions of Rocking Chair at parts. The bootleg is pretty widely available on the internet and I would be interested in hearing others' opinions as well. Its possible that this is just another example of Noel merging two songs.

Did he write at all ? Is there any notebook of songs from that period ? - Between Definitely Maybe and WTSMG, Noel's songwriting seemed to become a bit darker, or at least more moody. He mostly wrote ballads during that time (Wonderwall, Talk Tonight, Cast No Shadow, The Masterplan) - Were some of the b-sides on The Masterplan lile Fade Away, HTWA, Going Nowhere, Rockin' Chair written in 1993 ? I remember an interview of Noel saying Going Nowhere was really old. Maybe 1992 ? Maybe was it written at the same time as HTWA since both share Burt Bachrach influences ?

I think the chorus for 'Lock All The Doors was written in 93' than the rest of the song in 2014/15. Can someone fact check this, or give me a more exact time period for this song?

(1) Noel wrote 'Colour My Life' and 'See The Sun' in 1991 or earlier. 'Arkayla' (AKA... 'R K La'/'I Will Show You'), 'Must Be The Music' and 'Columbia' [Instrumental] were played live by the band on 14 Jan 1992 so were written prior to this date. Likewise 'Snakebite' were written in 1992 or earlier. He also wrote some dance tunes with Mark Coyle at some point somewhere between 1989 and 1992. No doubt he wrote more material than this but we can't say for certain what. (2) Laying the songs out like this you can kind of see how his style has changed over time. 93 was his big year though. I think when momentum started building for the band he took the whole songwriting thing very seriously in a way he never did again. (3) Here's when the songs on The Masterplan were written (some are a little hard to determine): 1) Fade Away [Early 93 or Earlier] 2) (It's Good) To Be Free [Mid 93 or Earlier] 3) Going Nowhere [Mid 93] 4) Half the World Away/Rockin' Chair/Headshrinker [Mid/Late 93] 5) Listen Up [?] [Early 94 or Earlier] 6) Talk Tonight [Sep/Oct 94] 7) Acquiesce [Mar 95] [Based on an older song 'Being A Blue' [Mid/Late 93]] 8) The Swamp Song [?] [Jun 95 or Earlier] 9) The Masterplan [Aug 95] 10) Underneath The Sky [Oct 95] 11) Stay Young [?] [Jun 96 or Earlier] No worries pal. Those 3 songs were definitely all written in mid-late 93 with nothing I can really think of to seperate them. Always interesting to read these kind of things. Do you know when Going Nowhere or Whatever were written? 'Going Nowhere' was written in Mid 93. According to Tony McCarroll Noel wrote 'Whatever' around a catchy keyboard "ditty" that Tony Griffiths (of The Real People) wrote. Tony Griffiths in an interview appears to confirm this saying they (he and his brother) helped with the string arrangement on the track. This keyboard/synth is likely what you're hearing in the demo. The band met The Real People in late 92 and met up with them a number of times between then and Spring 93. This means it could have been written any time between those dates though I'm inclined to believe it was written later than earlier. I think the chorus for 'Lock All The Doors was written in 93' than the rest of the song in 2014/15. Can someone fact check this, or give me a more exact time period for this song? The chorus was written by spring 93 but could have been written earlier.

7) Acquiesce [Mar 95] [Based on an older song 'Being A Blue' [Mid/Late 93]] Interesting thread. There's little chance of it happening but I would love to read an auto-bio covering Noel's early song writing days ('89 to '95). Just saw Noel talking about writing Acquiesce while stuck in the Severn Tunnel! He was on the way to the studio to record Some Might Say (March 1995).

Just saw Noel talking about writing Acquiesce while stuck in the Severn Tunnel! He was on the way to the studio to record Some Might Say (March 1995). According to Paul Gallagher or Paulo Hewitt (I forget which) 'Being a Blue' was reportedly written about being a Manchester City fan and apparently plans were drawn up for Man City to actually use the song but the idea never came to fruition. In my opinion some of the lyrics hint this indeed could've been the case, most notably " Because we need each other, we believe in one another...". In regards to that story (which Noel has told multiple times) and to tie things up as nicely as possible I'd suggest Noel did some additional writing to the song in the Severn Tunnel which brought the song back into contention for the band.

In one of Noels old notebooks there was a song called “Suitcase song”. Is there any link to that and “Underneath the Sky”?
I’ve heard his story before about the latter being based on some poetry book or something... wonder if he lifted parts of the early song for this?

In this instance Suitcase Song is almost certainly Song In a Suitcase for which we have a set of handwritten lyrics for. A quick read of lyrics shows there is no obvious resemblance between the song and Underneath the Sky. It was a good thought however and one I briefly explored myself. A page from Noel's 1993 notebook

How close are we (collectively) to compiling a complete list of songs with a rough date for each? Would be facinating.

The quality of songs he wrote between 93 and 95 is incredible. Absolutely tremendous

Been looking back at this so thought I'd share my latest ponderings on it for anyone else who's similarly interested in Noel's progression as a songwriter.
Tried to divide Noel's early songwriting up into different chunks based on what we know, and the feel of each period...
1991: EARLIEST BAND COMPOSITIONS (UNRELEASED) - Must Be The Music - I Will Show You - Colour My Life - See The Sun - Snakebite
1992: LEARNING HIS CRAFT - Alive - Cloudburst - Strange Thing - I Will Believe ---and acoustically: - D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman - Take Me Away
EARLY '93: FINDING HIS FEET - Rock N' Roll Star* - Columbia* - Up In The Sky - Bring It On Down - Fade Away - Digsy's Dinner ---and acoustically: - Married With Children - Sad Song
LATER '93: THE HITS START TO COME EASILY - Whatever* - All Around The World - Live Forever* - Shakermaker - Cigarettes & Alcohol* - Hello - (It's Good) To Be Free - Headshrinker ---and a gentler side: - Don't Go Away - Rockin' Chair - She's Electric - Going Nowhere - Half the World Away
EARLY '94: FINAL DM/EARLY WTSMG: - Supersonic* - Slide Away* - Listen Up - Some Might Say* - Stand By Me - Roll With It - Hey Now! - Bonehead's Bank Holiday
LATER '94: CONFIDENCE GROWS - Morning Glory* - Champagne Supernova* - Don't Look Back In Anger* - The Girl In The Dirty Shirt ---and acoustically: - Talk Tonight* - It's Better People
EARLY '95: ON TOP OF HIS GAME - Wonderwall* - Cast No Shadow - Acquiesce - The Masterplan* - Round Are Way - Step Out - The Swamp Song
LATER '95: STARTING FROM SCRATCH FOR ALBUM 3 - Underneath The Sky - My Big Mouth - I Hope, I Think, I Know - It's Getting Better (Man!!) - Stay Young - D'You Know What I Mean? - Fade In-Out - Be Here Now - Angel Child
EARLY '96: BEGINNING TO STRUGGLE: - Magic Pie - The Fame - (I Got) The Fever - My Sister Lover - Flashbax
---
Really feels like 1993-1995 are almost bulletproof. 3 years of pure classics.
