Here is the commercial for those who care: It's worth pointing out that it's a cover of Wonderwall, and not the Oasis version. Also, I'm sure Noel would green light this just to make Liam mad at this point -- and put a few more quid in the old bank account. He may hate nostalgia, but he certainly loves profiting off of it .

If i'm not mistaken, cover version dont need the artist approval. Original versions of Beatles / Lennon tunes are never in adverts coz Macca / Ono refuse, but covers yes.
Depends on the deal, but as long as they pay, they can do whatever they want. We've had that debate before but NG still dont have complete control over songs from the first 3 records. So Sony probably handled it all.

Perhaps it's that the artist cant block use of it, but still gets paid for publishing? If this is the case, does it mean that Noel had no choice but to allow Half the World Away to be used? Seems like a loophole in the law if all you have to do is record a cover of a song to be able to attach an artist to something that they may or may not endorse or agree with.

I'm only guessing too, but since like the ad business is heavily using covers nowadays, i'd say it's definitely easy to get deals to use those songs. Noel could probably block anything from SOTSOG cover or not, since he's got complete control over them, but for the songs owned by Sony, i doubt he has a say. Noel definitely get money from publishing when a song is used as a cover on an ad, though. I'd say this all fall into the mechanical licence, and both parties agree on a price. www.makeitinmusic.com/licence-cover-song/

Fun fact, the first time I ever listened to Wonderwall it was in an advert. First time I heard it was on a video about Leah Betts we watched in a class at school. The irony of that only occurred to me years later.

Too-dday. There couldn't be a more affected way of singing this song. So dull.

If you bastards actually paid for your music then Noel wouldn’t have to licence lame Wonderwall covers and Liam wouldn’t have to advertise speakers or make his own tea. X

I like how the question isn't about whether he's a sellout or not, but whether he's a SICK sellout or just a regular, reasonable sellout.

It’s always a bit shite when I hear a song I like played in an advert but Im also pretty sure it’s the publisher that does it not the songwriter. The songwriter gets the biggest share of any income for the songs but isn’t the one that does the deal with the Shitehawks.
