The cassette Yoko handed over may well have had "For Paul" scrawled on it but John didn't write that. I want to believe John wrote that, so I have to ask: how do you know it wasn't him? Because why would John be compiling demos for Paul in the late 1970s? It's absolute nonsense. Secondly, if for some inexplicable reason John had written "for Paul" on the cassette, then you can bet it would have been heavily publicized at the time FREE AS A BIRD or REAL LOVE came out. It's not mentioned in any of the official Apple press releases nor do Harrison, McCartney or Starr mention it in any of their interviews at the time. If the tape does have "for Paul" written on it then it was obviously done by Yoko by or one of her assistants. Some reporter has heard of this scrawl at some stage and either deliberately or accidentally misrepresented it as being written by John. All it takes is one stupid mistake like this by a reporter and it gets picked up by other reporters who don't bother to fact check and next thing you know it's gone down in history as "factual". I had the radio on in the car yesterday and the announcer confidently stated the new Beatles single would be created by artificially replicating John's voice using AI for a brand new song. There were outraged people calling in vowing to boycott this "fake" single. I have no idea if the announcer knew what he was announcing was wrong or not but it was too late - the "fake AI Beatles single" is pretty much the angle every news station is now leading with.

I know once the stories said “AI” that people would not interpret it correctly. It’s the same technology that Peter Jackson was using.

I get your point, and you're probably right. But I also find hard to imagine Yoko or her assistant sitting down and listening to hours and hours of material and home demos trying to select the most beatle sounding ones to hand them to Paul. Why would they take the time to do such a thing? Even if it's not his handwriting, maybe John had put away a bunch of songs over the years "just in case" The Beatles ever came back?

Using AI to enhance a recording is the most Beatles thing to do. I disagree. But, much like you, I never knew a Beatle well enough to be sure.

I think Free as a Bird is amazing, George's guitar solo and his and Paul's harmonies are beautiful. Real Love as a song is great but I'm not that keen on the Beatles arrangement.
I think they only did a tiny bit of work on Now and Then back in the 90s so George's input will be minimal which will probably mean no solo or backing vocals which is such a huge part of the Beatles sound.

All John's unfinished tapes and demos were sorted and compiled for The Lost Lennon Tapes radio series in the 1980s/1990s. Yoko and her team approved everything that was used over the course of several years. Stuff was also being collated and put aside for the eventual John Lennon Anthology Box Set. Yoko and her team were well aware of what demos were maybe in a fit state to be finished off by the Beatles. A shame in a way that the MILK AND HONEY album was released in 1984. How great it would have been for the Beatles to get hold of John's unheard and unfinished 1980 studio multitracks to finish off? NOBODY TOLD ME would have made for an amazing new Beatles single if they'd completed that instead of FREE AS A BIRD.

I love Now & Then and Real Love in their raw demo form.
It's a point in time where Lennon was as a man, and it has that haunting sense of isolation and vulnerability to it. Partying, hangers on, famous friends, all that was a thing of the past at this point. He wasn't going out much and was very much a hermit around this time. It's rather more poignant that he wasn't around for much longer and versions made by the rest of The Beatles thereafter removes that.
The demos capture the loneliness and a sense of an ending. This version is my favourite (sadly not on YouTube anymore).

Yeah the next Lennon album could have been something, if raw sound
But it was the 80s, it probably would have been drowned in reverb and stupid drum sound and synths.

I wonder when this potential last Beatles song could come out? October/November is going to be Rubber Soul time. Highly doubt they overlap reissue with new song.

On the Steve Hoffman Forum there was an insider that said that the Rubber Soul Remix won't come out this year and that a new and bigger project will be release instead. It's been hinted that the Anthology series will be released on Disney+ along with Now and Then.

They really should release a 63 box set this year to mark it's 60th and then work forward to Rubber Soul.

Anthology documentary or the records ? I dont see the point of the latter, since all records are released one by one.
But the documentary was awesome. Had it on VHS (or was it on dVD ?) back in the day Would watch again in an extended version. 300 hours would be cool

It will probably be Anthology remastered in 4K.

The Beatles doc (which is phenomenal) could use a good HD scrub a dub.

I still remember the Free As a Bird video being everywhere on TV. all the time. Now ? The release of each and every album by the son of George martin are going deeper. Cant see the point of re-releasing them But Now and then, bring it on ! I'd be interested to hear the version they abandonned back then too.

I vividly remember, here in the States, ABC paid mega money to air the TV series and promoted it on "A-Beatles-C." I agree with you on all accounts. I know that Jeff Lynne and Giles Martin remixed "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" a few years back, cleaning up John's vocals a bit more and adding a few elements that were originally left unused from the '95 sessions. George nixed "Now and Then" in '95. Jeff has said that Ringo, Paul, and George did a rough backing track to it, so I hope that George will be heard in the track in some way… it's not a Beatles song without him, after all.

Just getting into music on a more serious level. This was huge. I think 35 million people watched each night in America. Wild stuff. I’m shocked “Free As A Bird” didn’t hit #1 in the UK or USA. It was everywhere. Plus it’s The Beatles. They should release “Now and Then” on 7”. A) 2023 Mix B) 1995 Mix

Well, Well, Well. Apparently the project will be even bigger than a reissue of Anthology in 4K. I don't know where they're getting their info from, but that one guy was talking about the release of Now and Then a week before Paul announced it. This new project is being compared with the ABBA Voyage hologram shows.

This new project is being compared with the ABBA Voyage hologram shows. Music to my ears if true, I live just near the ABBA show and its epic. This has to be bigger than an Anthology reissue. Peter Jackson wouldn't be involved if it was just this (they can get any skilled film makers/record producers to clean up this material). Anthology is not nearly ambitious enough a project for him, we definitely need to think bigger with this. Exciting times!
