For these reasons, you just wonder if creativity suffers these days as a result. Not saying that 'everything's shit these days' but surely all these distractions in modern day life impact the focus, mindset and train of thought that brings about quality of genuine greatness? Interesting post though, and it makes me think about how modern life encourages short attention spans, and nothing ever really feels like a seismic cultural event anymore. People's tastes are far broader than anything before, but how much thought and time are they giving to these entertainment products? Even if an album with the critical and commercial ratings of Sgt Pepper appeared today, it would just be a passing fad before the next raved review thing comes along. I saw the most watched Netflix shows of all time, and some of these shows have 500 million plus views - a viewership far greater than any of the most iconic highest watched television events or films in history. But in all seriousness, how long will these shows last in the memory? Another TV show will come along and replace it very soon (e.g. the much raved about Squid Game will be a thing of the past in a couple of months time). We're inundated with endless choices of entertainment (music, films, video games, TV, etc) but the modern world doesn't let these entertainment releases settle and deeply root itself in peoples hearts and minds. Easy access also makes things more disposable before another fad will pass along that we will all jump on to. Yes, I think a lot of this is very real and happening so fast to us that we’re not always aware of how much things are changing (and what it means for things like the future of music, movies, books, art, as well as politics.) Like anything, the “holy wifi” as they say in Parasite, has its yin and yang. It has united people (including us on this forum), granted people greater access to joy and information (alas plenty of it is bad information) and spurred more creative content than anyone ever dreamed might exist. But it has also created a world where people feel increasingly divided and alienated from others as we all retreat into our little private cocoons. The loss of a shared culture is pretty huge. In 1969, if you were young and hip and in almost any country that had radio and record stores, you listened to the Beatles. It was something everyone of that time shared in common, like a family. Same was true of certain movies, or TV shows, or events. But now you have Billy in his bedroom listening to some obscure grime on his phone while Sally’s watching a Korean TV show on Netflix and Dad’s still buying Miles Davis on vinyl while Mom’s watching Baby Yoda on Disney Channel … and they’re each having totally different experiences that don't connect. And, as a you’ve said, a consequence of this is that it’s infinitely harder for anyone to be a culture-changing icon because mass culture itself doesn’t really exist any more. You can't shake up a culture that is already completely scattered all over the place! So you can't have a Dylan or a James Dean or even an Oasis (they got in just under the wire.) This has been driven home to me this last week while looking at a bunch of “Best Albums of 2021” lists online. There is almost no consensus at all! I’ve seen entire lists of 25 albums that share nothing in common with other lists. That would not have been the case in 1969.

Every Beatles bootleg sounds like there’s a thunderstorm in the background.

Nicely said. It's a good point also how much they seem of our own times a half century later. I credit Peter Jackson with making the visuals look so crisp and vivid that it could have been shot yesterday, but it's also true that if you had no clue you could ALMOST believe these guys were from this time ... ( ALMOST because the one glaring difference is the total lack of screens. John isn't tweeting on his phone and George isn't checking his e-mail for that solo record deal ....) That's the one huge cultural shift that you feel and maybe it's why they were able to focus so intensely once the vibe finally got going in that room ... Or someone trying to record what they're doing and ruining the whole specialty of what we're watching. Everyone was tuned into what was going on and not focused elsewhere, which really helped that comraderie you feel in the documentary. You mean apart from all the cameras filming the documentary?

That is true haha. At least with those, you can't instantly post the footage to the world and spoil everything.

It is absolutely mind blowing that a bunch of the best Beatles singles didn’t make the album they were promoting. So wild the ethos at the time in the music industry.
Rubber Soul doesn’t get Day Tripper or We Can Work It Out
Revolver doesn’t get Paperback Writer
Pepper doesn’t get Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane
The White Album doesn’t get Hey Jude or the fast Revolution.
Imagine those already legendary albums with these songs? Martin always said his biggest professional regret was not putting Strawberry or Penny on Pepper.

Pepper with Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane, instead of Good Morning Good Morning and Lovely Rita or Fixing a Hole, would've made the album an undisputed GOAT album. I'm glad they got it right for Abbey Road where you had a blend of classic single-worthy songs and Beatles musicianship to make for the perfect cap to their discography (chronologically, session-wise).

Everyone likes The Beatles, even those who say they hate The Beatles. Because undoubtedly they will like something that The Beatles influenced, so they like The Beatles by proxy.
No getting away from it.

Man... Alternate tracklists have leaked their way into discussions on The Beatles. If that doesn't embody the spirit of this forum, I don't know what will I love it though

Side two …. "The Long and Winding Road" " All Things Must Pass" "Let it Be" ^^having these 3 songs in a row doesn’t work. 2 in a row is a dirge, a slog. 3? Forget about it. It just kills all 3 of those beautiful tracks stone dead.

I love that cover of Back in the USSR by the Dead Kennedy’s that someone posted here (somewhere in these pages).
Listening to The Masterplan album today got me thinking: best Beatles covers?

Also was just reminded of this one. Too raw and too quiet for everyone’s taste I’m sure but this is what a great (and lasting) cover is all about – make it entirely your own and give something unexpected to the song that makes it new. Nobody but Johnny Cash could do this song this way, yet it illuminates how great the song is.

Too many great White Album tracks are missed if it's compact into a single disc. That would be an amazing album but the number of tracks is a huge part of what makes it special. Yes it's much more fun making a tracklisting for a triple-set White Album using everything they recorded in 1968 (pretend the Yellow Submarine album never got issued). So you've got the following (good audio quality) studio tracks to consider and mix in somewhere Hey Jude Revolution Hey Bulldog Across The Universe The Inner Light Not Guilty What's The New Mary Jane St Louis Blues Blue Moon Los Paranoius / Step Inside Love Congratulations Gone Tomorrow Here Today Baby's You're So Square Plus clean 4-track demos of - Circles Sour Milk Sea Junk Child Of Nature Plus I don't see why you can't have two versions of the same song on a triple album (George did that on his All Things Must Pass triple album). So you can also consider outtakes like - Helter Skelter (slow version) While My Guitar Gently Weeps (acoustic) Set yourself a time limit for each side (I think around 22-26 minutes would have been the extreme limit for an LP side back then) and have fun!

I did enjoy Get Back, but it did drag on to be honest. If I heard Don't Let Me Down one more time I'd cry.
Oh and Paul definitely was the odd one out imo. When he left the studio a few times the others seem to loosen up and enjoy themselves
The highlight for me was hearing "Jealous Guy", it was called something else then though and had different words
