I was revisiting my blur cds and realized how brilliant this album was, listening to it now, thoughts on the record?

Beetlebum is apparently Liam’s favourite Blur song.
I do like the album, in particular: death of a party, Chinese bombs, you’re so great, Essex dogs. This album has quite a different sound to it compared to the last few Blur albums, which in my opinion works far better. It’s also more sound driven than song driven I think. More of a Graham Coxon led record than Damon Albarn.
Personally I like Thirteen a lot, it’s got a great sound to it and the songs are pretty consistently good and interesting. Apart from Swamp Song, which is just dire. Bugman also goes on twice as long as it needs to but otherwise it’s perfect.

I like most songs from it, but as an album it feels a bit too dense for me. It's been a while since a listened to it from start to finish, maybe I should give it a listen.
Unpopular opinion: I think the album with better flow (not the better) is Think Tank, I always listen to it from start to finish.

Think Tank is a well structured record, still the second worst blur album, in front of the disastrous debut record.

Think Tank is a well structured record, still the second worst blur album, in front of the disastrous debut record. I’m one of the few who like Leisure. It’s not a great record all around but it’s got some nice moments and the shoe gazey sound worked well for them I thought. “Sing” may be their best tune.

Where I think simplicity sky rocketed Oasis to success with DM I think it slowed any momentum blur had. The album is so basic and Damon had trouble writing the tunes. I like 'Bang' and 'There's no other way' but most of the tracks are downright boring. Birthday is a trash tune, but I see why you'd like Sing. Those are the only tracks even worth mentioning.

One of the greatest album's of the 90's, and Blur's masterpiece.
Beetlebum just ripped apart Britpop and saved Blur's career and made them far cooler then they were ever before. Song 2, On Your Own and M.O.R are fantastic singles, On your Own has hints of Albarn's Gorillaz. Some lo-fi american alternative just oozes over the whole album. Blur released good work after that and their Britpop will be the work they are more known for but Self titled is their tour de force.

Perfect album from start to finish. Remember when it came out, what a shock coming from the Great Escape.
Gotta check the b-sides from this record too, Blur bsides are amazing, but on this one, they went further into that US sound that was a bit more polished on the record.

Beetlebum is amazing, might be their best song ever, they tried that sound before with He Thought of Cars on TGE, but on Beetlebum they perfected it.

Personally I thought Blur made two weaker albums, Leisure (5/10) and Think Tank (6/10). Three quite good albums in Modern Life (7/10), 13 (7/10) and Magic Whip (7/10). Two great ones in this (8/10) and The Great Escape (8/10). And one classic in Parklife, which I’d maybe give about 9-9.5/10.
I’m not a Blur diehard (being raised in Lancashire didnt help!), but I do quite like this album. It was my introduction to them as the very first Blur song i knew was “Song 2”, and I’d call it one of their best albums. It was a well-timed departure for them, and I like how much Graham Coxon gets to shine on it.
It must be pretty good as the band still rate it, unlike a lot of their stuff. Ive heard Damon call The Great Escape a bad album, Leisure awful and Think Tank a load of b****ks. But they still like this.

One of my favourite Blur albums for sure. The problem is that it reminds me so much of Pavement that it makes me want to listen to them instead.
