These new Noel songs are terrible. What is going on? David Holmes has to go - that might help. Where is our melodic Beatle loving Noel Gallagher? Thoughts?

This might not be the right section for this thread, saying that I don't think we have a section for this sort of thread.

Thoughts? I completely agree - you're braver than me though. Get your helmet on, visor down and put your gumshield in for the fan boy kicking's arriving in 5, 4, 3, 2...….

I do like This Is The Place. It's an album worthy song. I even like the other songs save for Black Star Dancing unless we're talking about the remix version. But I generally agree. These songs are mostly b-sides or bonus songs at best. Now, maybe Noel is cognizant of that, which is why he's releasing them through EP's. But really, I would have just preferred them to all drop at once due to their quality, rather than string us along over many months, giving us average material and dropping our interest as a consequence.

That being said, I do applaud Noel for doing these EP's (IF) he still goes ahead with his official album 4 that he's supposedly recording/recorded. Considering it's Noel we are talking about, I have my doubts we will see it soon and I think this is what we'll be getting for this cycle.
These EP's are a breath of fresh air in at least the sense that we are getting more songs between album releases and I approve of the strategy. I just wish they were a little stronger material and or not strung along.

These new Noel songs are terrible. What is going on? David Holmes has to go - that might help. Where is our melodic Beatle loving Noel Gallagher? Thoughts? The irony of people using The Beatles to argue against Noel growing into different styles of song-writing. I guarantee if this forum was around in 1966 there'd be posts like "Tomorrow Never Knows?! All style over substance, and no big chorus. What happened to the melodic, Elvis-loving John Lennon??". Anyway, I'm very much hoping LP4 is made with David Holmes (or another producer who won't let Noel fall into old traps), and is filled with songs as energetic, colourful, and well-composed as Holy Mountain or This is the Place. As Noel used to say, " onwards!".

Contemporary initial reactions to Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane were mixed (see that infamous American Bandstand clip). And then they conquered the charts anyway. By the time they stepped away from psychedelia, they were chastised by some for not getting weirder. The thing is, whenever the Beatles experimented, they ended up creating some of the best examples of whatever they were experimenting with at the time. Noel isn't really doing that. He's doing perfectly enjoyable music, but it's music that is neither pushing the envelope, nor showcasing what he's best at. I wouldn't want him to shackle himself to a formula that would make Oasis fans happy at the expense of his creativity, but he's not reinventing music.

What he is doing though, is more instrumental-based songwriting, and I think he's getting better and better at it. After over two decades, his music finally sounds passionate again, and I don't think his melodies have been this infectious since the nineties - they're not just not confined to the vocals anymore.

The music has indeed been joyus but the primary problem is his voice or the way in which he is choosing to record it.

He's not an amazing vocalist, but I think he's handling his newer tracks fine. He sounds great on She Taught Me How to Fly, for instance.

I've always thought Noel's second greatest gift was his voice. Even in his middle age, it's still amazing to me.
