I'm kinda split on them tbh. Cost is a major factor. I look at the price tags and just think, well that's X amount of CDs or maybe a few gigs.
I'm totally baffled by fans over excitement to some of them. Best example I can give is the latest one from Metallica; a super dooper re-release of their And Justice For All Album. Great band. Great album. But this box set is jam packed full of utter shite, seriously check it out, crappy camcorder and audio recordings: basically SHIT bootlegs, and endless demo versions. As much as I like ANY song I DO NOT need the demo with vocals, demos without vocals, 1st demo version, 2nd demo version, final demo version, demo version that is now the final version even though the other version was supposed to be the final version, version.........
I do one ONE super box. That of Pearl Jam's Ten. Loved the album & band from first listen. Listened to it going to & from school for practically a whole year. The Super Box came out & at the time was very well priced for the content I thought, was €120 if I remember correctly.
As far as being really well put together, well, check out WOODSTOCK - BACK TO THE GARDEN: THE DEFINITIVE 50TH ANNIVERSARY ARCHIVE; insane stuff............

I listened to the 10 CD version a few days ago but the 36CD version is huge I love the bits of announcements between sets "xxx go to the information booth, your wife is having a baby"

I actually preferred the history box sets bands and artists used to do back in the day. A career overview, singles, album tracks, b-sides, live tracks, unreleased stuff with a massive color book. Does anyone remember those. I have ones on The Who, The Velvet Underground, The Faces, Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, The Jam etc....
Super Deluxe box set, far too expensive. My girlfriend got me U2's Achtung Baby one for Christmas a year or two back. Beside that I avoid them unless they are must buy.

As You Were will be my first collector box set.
I'd like to have The Smiths' one (with all the album) too.

I've got the White Album and Esher demos vinyl box set. It's nice but was rather over priced. I have Dylan Biograph vinyl box set too. I'll definitely pick up the Abbey Road equivalent.

I've got the White Album and Esher demos vinyl box set. It's nice but was rather over priced. I have Dylan Biograph vinyl box set too. I'll definitely pick up the Abbey Road equivalent. I have the White Album too, albeit managed to wait until it was discounted to £60 at HMV. I also have the BHN and As You Were boxes. Also the Libertines comeback album and the TLSP2 album. Generally I think they are over priced and can contain extras that you don’t really return to very often. The Beatles ones being a bit different as you’re paying to get the new takes on vinyl. For me, the BHN set was actually good value as we got 6 of the Mustique demos on vinyl plus Going Nowhere IIRC. Stuff that is pretty unique but you’ll actually revisit and enjoy. The AYW set annoys me as it’s taller than a standard 12” and therefore is a bit awkward to store! Looking forward to getting the WMWN deluxe set delivered tomorrow
