However...every time I listen to the BHN remaster I am more and more convinced they didn't go back to the master tapes AT ALL, that it's just the digital master from 1997 turned down a bit and with the treble/harshness turned down also (some of the songs, e.g. It's Gettin Better Man, sound like shit as a result of this).

I'd bet anything that they didn't go back to the tapes and it was all done digitally. The 'remastered' b-sides also sound friggin awful, and definitely distort in the same places as before, so it's not a proper remaster. The only real remaster is Noel's messing with DYKWIM, cause they HAD to go back to the tapes then, seeing as he was remixing it too.
