Binary poll. Simples.
Good band. But lived up to their early hype and potential? Nah, mate

No... But, what else could they be? It's not like rock bands are becoming huge in the way they did in the 90's and the decades before that,.

Yes. Undoubtedly and history will show that to be the case.
What were they meant to do? Go stadium rock? They were never going to be that, never had the anthems. Churn out the same type of songs like all their peers did from the mid 2000s? Thank god they didn’t. They followed up with a smash hit album in AM that incorporated more influences in their music and became more ambitious, breaking free from the rigid structures of ‘indie rock’. Critically acclaimed, commercially successful - they can’t have done more.

You know what I'm going to say. I think their the best band of the last 19 years or so.
But I think they have and more so. They take risks and don't rest on their laurels. The backlash they took from fan's for Humbug and growing out their hair was so OTT, but in the long run it did them a world of good and now most of those that were shitting on it consider it their best albums. Look at all the British bands from that time that fell to the wayside.
And AM moved them on onto another level and earned them a new fanbase, I remember the first years of the band been a very laddie fanbase then with AM, it went to teenage screaming girls and young guys with quiffs and leather jackets. They are one of the bigger bands out there who actually don't play it safe.

Saw them live a few months ago - fantastic gig.
I loved all their previous albums but I don't want the same thing over and again so I loved Tranquility Base. Great to see them slowing things down and developing their sound a bit (rather than just changing their sound just for the sake of change).
Musically and artistically have they lived up to their potential? Definitely.
Commercially? Well they don't use autotune on their vocals and they don't have a female lead singer who gyrates and twerks around in her underwear onstage so there's not much chance of them ever topping the charts worldwide again.

No, they didn't live up their hype cos' they never had the talent. They're probably the most overrated band in the last 20 years. I can't remember a single great melody written by Turner. Even their hit singles are banal at best.
For a band like that to be seen by some as the best british band at the moment, show you the state of british music right now.

They are better now than ever. I don't care what wider audience think.
