Andy Bell gets a lot of criticism from Oasis fans and I'm just wondering if it's justified. I think he's a good musician who can write some decent tunes but he just didn't fit Oasis.

he didnt fit oasis, that is right imo. Andy and Gem for the most part brought nothing new to the table and their contributions were mostly always the weakest aspects of the albums. They probably only wrote two or three decent tunes between them over three albums. Noels hopes of a "creative injection" just didnt happen. Their songs were just average at best. Gem gets somewhat of a pass for being a great guitarist and managed to play oasis songs with the original spirit. Saying that, I would choose bonehead anyday to be in oasis. I prefer his style over Gems skill and I would much rather have Noel on lead.
Andy bell is just boring tbh. There is really nothing that I can point at go "that was amazing".

I was a Ride fan long before I was an Oasis fan. Andy Bell belongs in Ride. Always has always will. He is a fantastic musician. Ride are an amazing band.

It was definitely exciting news at the time. I remember they almost hired another guy. David Potts or something but he rubbed Noel the wrong way at the last second. Probably had too much of his own mind. Noel wanted a mindless soldier. On paper Andy was a huge addition but I should have known better. By 1999 Andy Bell was hardly the Andy Bell of Ride from 1990. That band flamed out by 1995 and his projects after that didn’t find much success critically or by the fans. I think we Oasis fans were expecting too much. Ride Andy was not walking through that door. Gem is Gem. Didn’t expect him to do anything but play the Bonehead role which he excelled at.

might not be remembering that right but I seem to remember it being along those lines.

Sounds about right. Noel should have hired him. Noel needed a rival. Someone to push him to be better. Play better.

Andy is a solid guy and an excellent guitarist. I can't understand the hate. Unfortunately when he was in Oasis his songwriting skills had already degraded to classic rock pastiche.
Thanks god he's back where he belongs now. For those who are not familiar with what he's been doing recently, here are a couple of links. Check this stuff out, you won't be disappointed.

I don't understand why people say he didn't fit. I can't think of anyone else they should have chosen instead.

By the way, he's got an electronica/synthwave side project named GLOK.
He's just put a record out and it's excellent if you're into this kind of stuff. Definitely not a boring guy, in spite of his subpar contributions when he was in Oasis.

I have nothing against him, he seems a nice guy. But I wonder how different Oasis albums could've been if someone else (with more creative imput) had joined the band instead of him.
It seems a bit like a wasted opportunity (both for Oasis and his career) because ultimately he didn't brought that much into the band (besides Turn Up The Sun, of course)

He's good at counting shoes, though not much else... Turn Up The Sun was alright, probably the best non-Noel track.

Andy Bell in Oasis... nothing.
Andy Bell in Ride... just fantastic (especially the first couple of albums and their reunion one...)

I think Andy and Gem bought more to the band than songs alone.
When Bonehead and guigs left in 1999 the band needed a bit of stability, both Noel and Liam were also going through issues in their private lives. I appreciate “stability” is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a rock and roll band! But at that time it was needed.
The live performances were different with Gem doing a bit of lead guitar. Maybe the gigs didn’t have the intensity of the 1994-1996 live era but they were still a great live band.
Andy joined oasis to play bass guitar. He was never a bass guitarist before but had to become comfortable with it.. Imagine joining a band and playing an instrument which is not your first choice. I thought he was good.
Yes their song contributions were weaker than Noel’s but Andy’s background is shoegaze and he would probably be more experimental than he could be in oasis. He was writing songs that went against his normal style. To be fair their work would always be judged against Noel’s songs or the old stuff, they could never win.
Its a waste of time comparing the Andy and Gem period of the band to the good old days. They were two separate eras and I just see it as that. Between 1994 and 1999 was the classic era of the band, no one would argue with that i’m Sure, however between 1999 and 2009 the band did some great stuff, just a few examples: 2000 January BBC Radio 1 Session with Steve lamaq 2001 Tour of Brotherly Love shows in USA Noise and confusion tour 2002 The singles off Heathen Chemistry The DBTT period seemed to be a revival. 2005 city of Manchester stadium gigs DBTT USA tour with kasabian playing bigger venues 2009 River Plate Stadium Argentina gig

Something about Andy's bass playing always rubbed me the wrong way, he was clearly a guitarist playing bass rather than a bassist (no shit). There's a video of them in 2009 playing a festival and Andy's using a capo on his bass which is the most pointless endeavour ever.
People like to shit on Guigs' supposed lack of bass ability but that man had groove and a killer tone live; something I feel that Andy lacked. Listen to Maine Road or the White Room performances to see what I mean, his bass was a perfect layer for Noel and Bonehead's wall of guitar. Andy's bass tone never seemed to have any defintion and he didn't play the bassline for DLBIA that Guigs played live that IMO is really good and it's a shame you can't hear it on the record; it's simple but makes the chords just flow that extra bit.
PS: has anyone noticed the little bass solo/groovy thing at the end of Fade in/out? (from like 5:40 onwards) its cool as fuck!

he didn't fit because he was fucking playing bass listen to his guitar in Ride - old or new he's amazing. so are his vocals. Oasis was just something he wandered into after his other great band broke up. a gig- a paycheck- loads of fun im sure. but nothing ever said it would amount to anything in the shadow of someone like Noel Gallagher. for him to be measured by his time in Oasis is ridiculous. glad they reformed Ride. his career has come full circle and is being fulfilled in that way- and his solo work. i think he's brilliant- and seems like a really nice guy as well.

Had he not contributed any tunes, then I would think he was class.
Turn Up The Sun, aside, he wrote possibly the worst collections of songs I have ever purchased.

He never did anything other than a great job on bass and he contributed an album opener. As to why the other songs made it onto Oasis records, you'd have to ask Noel Gallagher. They all offered up songs and Noel chose.

Great musician and chap, but not right for Oasis. - I think they should of just had session bassists once Guigs left. Having TWO new members was tribute act territory even if it is all about the Gallaghers to most people
- Made Gem a member but not let him write for the band (his songs are way worse than Andy’s IMO.) - Have Noel writing all but one album track from Liam. - Kept hold of Alan White

I don't understand why you would place those restrictions on the songwriting? Noel picked the songs. He didn't have to pick any number from anybody.

I think there was a conscious decision on Noel's behalf to include more LAG songs. Even if it was sub conscious.
