Hi there,
I’m kazz and I’m in NZ
I’m researching into a potential book on the infamous 1998 tour to Aus and NZ. Also the cancelled 1996 gigs.
Were any of you there? Any personal images of the gigs or band around town? Anyone keep hold of their ticket? Anyone have any items or the cancelled 1996 gigs. I’m not requesting to take items just the potential to have a photo or scan of the item that I could use with your permission.
I’d be happy to hear reviews as well, positive or negative. This would be a self published work and I’m at the research gathering phase right now.
Reason for doing this is that that point the band was at their peak and the events of that tour pretty much finished them off here. And took them out of the A league in Aus. Could have been playing the MCG on future tours had they not cocked it up.
Thanks Kazz

Sorry I can't provide anything but my support; your book project looks interesting as there's indeed little coverage of that tout apart from the "I'd rather walk" rant & a few Noel interviews filmed over there.
Nick Amies talks about it briefly in his book "Where did it all go wrong?", I guess it's also featured in Paolo Hewitt's "Forever the people" (haven't read that one yet), but that's pretty much all.
Shame no one got round to writing a comprehensive Oasis biography since late 1996/early 1997 at the height of the Oasis mania; one would've expected at least one book to come up after the split but all we've got for a retrospective are special editions of Q Magazine & the like which don't delve into particular eras like that fateful '98 Australia/NZ tour which nearly broke the band had it not been followed by the South American gigs to raise their spirits at the eleventh hour.

Thanks mate. Yeah it’s hard work finding material. Especially as an outsider. Have read Paulo’s book which provides some great insight. Might see if I can tap him up for help.

I have a few memories.
I was at the Melbourne gig (I think there was only one) in 1998. It wasn't even full. Highlights for me included a powerful version of ROLL WITH IT. Liam looked knackered when he finished and had to sit on an amp and towel himself off. Noel was grinning - they knew they'd nailed that one. Noel also did a gorgeous slow acoustic version of SOME MIGHT SAY and the long SETTING SUN / FADE IN OUT medley.
My overall memory was the band were good but the crowd were lackluster - in particular talking and shouting complaints ("play a fast one!") during the long version of SETTING SUN.
I used to get my bootlegs from a little shop in Adelaide. The owner was a massive Oasis fan and the shop was in a little lane right around the corner from the band's hotel. I went in there a few weeks later and he had photos of himself with the entire band. They'd just wandered in one morning while they were out exploring. The shop door just opened and there they were - I surprised he didn't have a heart attack. They'd happily posed for photos with him. He said he was a bit worried because they checked out the Oasis section in the CD racks and it was full of bootlegs. Obviously they weren't fussed because they didn't say anything to him about it.
It was honestly the highlight of this guy's life. I can't remember his name and the shop is long gone so I don't know how you could track him down if you wanted more information or copies of the photos. I could probably give you a rough street address via google maps. He was a big guy and would probably be in his late 50s or early 60s by now.
I had friends who were in the bar at the Adelaide hotel and they said the band came down for a few drinks in the evening. They said the band seemed happy to greet anybody who wandered over and sign autographs but after a while a crowd started to build around them and they quietly left.
I think I have some photos I took of the Melbourne gig but from memory they're not great. I'll try to find them if you're interested. I'm pretty sure I kept the tickets too but I'm not sure where I stuck them.

Fabulousbakers that sounds great! If it’s not too much effort I’d love to see what you have. But no rush. This is something that will take me a while.
I’ll PM you.
Yeah the 1996 cancelled gigs they sold 45k between Sydney and Melbourne. Sydney Showgrounds was 25k and sold out I think. That was the moment they blew it. I doubt they played 45k across all the Aus and NZ gigs in 1998.

Had a quick look for the photos but I think my wife might have stashed the photo album out in the shed roof storage. I'll clamber up tomorrow and have a look. I did find an old newspaper cutting and I've scanned that. I have the original if required. I'm so sorry but I can't find the photos I may have been confusing them with the 2002 or 2005 concerts and it's possible I didn't take any in 1998. Either way I know I've never taken a decent photo at any Oasis concert I went to so you're not missing much. I did find a couple of other newspaper cuttings. They're too big for the scanner so I've just done a quick stitch-together job. If you need better copies for the book I can take a high def photo of them or you're welcome to have the originals. drive.google.com/open?id=11HjULD_N8cGdsH2VDvILOPufLlL2eJ_Pdrive.google.com/open?id=1bKHL1W8YkqHJtoXSedwE2u4mqxaPxvCnThe Herald Sun is a Melbourne tabloid newspaper.

Hi. Thanks again. I’d never take your originals but will be in touch if I need the scan. Just getting the photographers name is a great help as I can try and source more.
Thanks for looking for the photos. Not a problem you don’t have any. May need to tap your brain and memories instead as very difficult to find people who went to each gig.
This era pre widespread internet and smart phones means most people didn’t keep much.
As I want to do this properly copyright clearances are a big deal but newspapers are fairly straightforward.
This will take me years!

I didn't know about that derogatory comment Noel made about Diana, quite insensitive (even though I admit he's got a point when he says some mourned Diana more than they did their late grandparents).
Did it cause a stir in the UK at the time? I guess the British tabloids must've picked up on it.
