For the second week of this thread, let's go with one of the most criminally unknown band of the 2000's: Flotation Toy Warning.
If you love long songs with hints of psychedelia mixed with baroque music and space rock, then this band is for you. They released two albums, the first one "Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Desk" in 2004 and last year, "The Machine That Made Us".
Like with Belle and Sebastian, don't forget to give your opinions/thoughts even though you're only discovering them now !

Hipster-tastic, melancholic, arty, and well-produced - of course I like them. Not listened much their newer stuff but Bluffer's Guide... still holds up really well and would have been the best indie album of it's year if not for Funeral. They're a bit hipster-band-by-numbers what with the extended songs and brass sections and pretentious name, but they do it all well and that's an aesthetic I'm always a fan of anyway. I voted them "very good" and "Happy 13" as their best song.

Mercury Rev is the band that most jumped to mind when hearing these guys.
Musically they're very interesting, but vocally they've never really done it for me. I like the dreamy nature of many neo-psychedelic vocalists and they don't measure up to say the beauty of, say, Holes by Mercury Rev. An impossible threshold to reach given its a masterpiece but it's hard to separate that comparison for me personally.
That said, I don't dislike them by any means and I'd happily sit back and listen to them. I just think there are better bands within the genre. Alright will be my rating.

I had a chance to listen to Happy 13 and Controlling the Sea, also Donald Pleasance.
Happy 13 was very good. It has a nice combination of trip-hop and sort of an indie pop/rock sound. I like the middle portion where everything gets a little hazier and how it sorts itself at the end. The change from the looped drums to the live drums is a nice touch too.
Controlling the Sea's intro sort of reminded me of Reflektor at the very, very start. I like the calmness of the drums and how easy going it is. The guitar tones are also really nice too. The lead singer reminds me a lot of Brandon Flowers in some ways.
Donald Pleasance blew me away. It's filled with heartache but it's so beautiful at the same time. I'd rate that as my favorite of the bunch.
Overall, Very Good.
