Being in a very calm period about anything Gallagher related, it's time to have debates about some other bands that don't get talked that much on this forum. And for the start, let's go with Belle and Sebastian. Scottish band formed in Glasgow, in 1996. Folk rock mixed chamber pop, Belle and Sebastian music is mainly influenced by The Smiths, The Velvet Underground, Love, Felt, Simon and Garfunkel and Nick Drake. Here's a list of songs and their discograpy for people who don't know them: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belle_and_Sebastian_discographyDon't hesitate to give your opinions/thoughts even if you just discover this band ! Beady’s Here Now time for you to throw your Chvrches albums out the window and give this band a listen.

Remember back in the 90s the British music press wanked themselves silly over these fellas. Kinda felt like I SHOULD like them, but just did nothing for me. In summary, they're alright, but not for me.

Good idea, this, lubeck , hope it continues for a while. I've not listened to B&S for a while, and in all honesty those songs reminded me why. They're not bad by any stretch but they're another one of those gentle, vaguely melodic indie acts that just do nothing for me - I wouldn't leave the room if they started playing, but there's just nothing in their music to bring me back to them ahead of others. I voted "alright", and The State I Am In for the best song.

I think they’re very good on account of If You’re Feeling Sinister and Boy With The Arab Strap albums. Excellent albums the pair of them so worth the entry fee alone. After that, I’m not too fussed about their releases with it being extremely patchy (similar view with Oasis), and there’s far too many times after these classic albums when they border into being a bit too twee - albums to largely file alongside with petals, homemade lemonade, daisy picking and Zooey Deschanel. How do we go about discussing fairly obscure bands? Do you nominate anyone lubeck. I’ve got one fairly obscure cult band in mind that I think many would enjoy but they’ve never been discussed on here.

Surprised with the mixed reviews, to be honest. I kind of agree with Matt description of their post 90's work (since The Life Pursuit, their records are bland, even though Stuart Murdoch is still able to write gems here and there). However, 90's Belle and Sebastian is one of my favourite bands of all the time. Tigermilk, If You're Feeling Sinister and The Boy With The Arab Strap are great albums (Sinister and The Arab Strap being two of the best albums of the 90's in my book). And that's where I disagree with you The Escapist : what separates B&S from bands like Of Montreal, Camera Obscura, and most of the 2000's indie bands, it's the quality of the songwriting. I don't think any of those bands could pull out songs like Like Dylan In The Movies, Sleep The Clock Around, Seeing Other People, This Is Just A Modern Rock Song, etc. For me, Stuart Murdoch is one of the best melodist of his generation. matt I'd like to introduce an other obscure band next week (british band signed on a french indie label) but yes sure, you can introduce this band for the week after !

Fair enough, I can see why people like them, but to me there's nothing in those songs that grabs me. Personally, I don't find the melodies much more than pleasant, which isn't a bad thing but it doesn't really lend them to repeated listens. And do the artists in this have to be obscure bands? I think it would be cool to discuss people that aren't unknown but don't really get talked about on here (Lana Del Rey, for instance, I think has a bunch of songs that people on here might like but that don't really get attention in indie-rock circles)

Are we including solo artists as well? Yes ! And The Escapist, the band/artist doesn't have to be obscure !

Back in 2003, that Arcade Fire EP had some serious late 90s Belle & Sebastian vibes. That was initially the road I thought they’d walk. A USA/Canadian Belle. Man was I Fucking Wrong. Not that that would have been a bad road go walk.

I like them a lot but I have listened to maybe 50% of their discography as they have a lot of b sides and extra tracks. I think they lost it a bit from "Write about love" to this day but still good.
Some of my favourites:
The Boy With The Arab Strap (of course) Sukie in the Graveyard The Fox in the Snow I'm a Cuckoo Get me Away from here I'm Dying White Collar Boy Song for Sunshine Ease your feet in the sea Simple Things The Chalet Lines Long black scarf Allie
And the God Help The Girl album is brilliant (the original one, not the movie OST)

Love them of course, though they really feel like two separate bands as they really tightened up their sound before making Dear Catastrophe Waitress, becoming a much better live act but perhaps losing some of that magic that charaterises their early records and EPs. Those songs feel like they belong in their own universe and when listening to them you can't help but feel a part of it too.
The later stuff is less consistent but they put out the occasional indie jam or bop here and there and the records mostly hold up well, with some solid contributions from other band members. The only ones that I don't really care for are their latest EP series and Write About Love.
More great tunes not already mentioned:
Jonathan David A Summer Wasting If You're Feeling Sinister Nobody's Empire I Didn't See it Coming Le Pastie De La Bourgeoisie I Want the World to Stop Act Of the Apostle Dress Up In You Wrapped Up in Books I Fought in a War Women's Realm
Ps. A lot of their greatness lies in the lyrics! So much of their originality comes from Stuart's words and they're almost always worth paying extra attention to, plenty of dark humour there. Look up those you have trouble hearing because of the hushed production lol.
Pps. Any fans should definitely read (former bassist) Stuart David's In the All-Night Café about the first years of the band if you haven't already.

Also met Richard Colburn at Primavera Sound 2015 after watching them play a great 1-hour set. He was in the crowd for Ride's headline set (they fuckin killed it too) and I had a chat with him after, lovely man.

As andybellwillring perfectly said, Belle and Sebastian songs have their own little universe, seem out of time and those EPs are B&S as maybe their most B&S (I don't if what I say is clear ). A Century of Fakers, This Is Just A Modern Rock Song, String Bean Jean, Lazy Line Painter Jane, Slow Graffiti, Dog On Wheels, etc. All gems that weren't released on an album.
