Song writing aside of course. Well, what do you think?

Gem probably more technically gifted but Noel made the Oasis wall of sound. I prefer Noel’s old approach of turning it up to 11 and just thrashing out solos. Gem is just standard, capable but nothing remotely special or unique about him.

As a guitarist of nearly 20 years, it's Gem by a country mile.

As a guitarist of nearly 20 years, it's Gem by a country mile. Agreed... but I still prefer to hear Noel play most things.

Gem obviously.
But technique isn't the only thing that matters. Feel is also very important. I prefer Noel, who also has a bit of an own sound (ironically).

Maybe Andy Bell! In ride he's great. Of course noel has the intuition of the great songwriter, he knows how to create something that works for the best, but sometimes when I look old videos of Oasis it's seems a bit strange to me, not only watching noel being the one to the right of the stage but also noel as lead guitarrist. Cause I compare that with the actual Noel. He plays solos rarely during solo concerts and also when it was in oasis during the last decade with the band he delegated Gem to take more lead guitarrist duties, as he preferred to be the keith Richards of the situation, the one who carries the song. Of course he played solos in songs like live forever, rock n roll star, the shock of the lightning etc, but it was a bit different from the noel - lead guitarrist of the first years, when he was the one who did all the lead stuff, with no exception. Gem seems to be a bit more agile while playing, noel is a bit more slow and static, but i see gem more as professional musician, a great professional musician while noel as the man with the masterplan, musically talking.

Gem of course. He's very technical and has his own style, which is pretty rare for that kind of guitarist. Very technical guitarists usually all sound the same.
But no one can make a G sound like a unique chord like Noel does.

I would say Gem definitely. Noel is good but Gem is better (and so is Andy Bell come to that)

Most session guitarists are technically brilliant but lack any signature sound or personality. Gem is that kind of guy.
If you recall, Coldplay tried to write a Noel Gallagher style solo on their last album (so just got Noel in the studio to play it himself). Nobody tries to write a Gem Archer style solo.
Noel streets ahead for me. It's what music is about - balls to technique, a sufficient amount will do. It's all about character and personality, the defining traits of a great musician and great music.

In 96-97 Noel was a great guitar player imo. I’m not talking about technique ofc but about passion and character. Bc of drugs and/or it was super productive period of his life? Hard to tell. Anyway It’s joy to listen to the bootlegs of this era
