I don't mean the average Joe as the answer would be simple: The singles (THT, SCYHO, LBL, SB) that were marketed well, and incredibly strong.
Rather, I'm talking about the casual Oasis fans. However you want to define 'casual' - perhaps as those familiar with the Oasis discography, but have no further in-depth knowledge of the band. And, most significantly, have listened to Oasis albums and know Oasis beyond the singles that are released.
Sure, the singles have a large part to play in the reasoning of those casual fans, especially because Heathen Chemistry's singles were so strong. But these casual fans profess their admiration of Heathen Chemistry to the full album itself.
This appreciation of Heathen Chemistry perplexes the Oasis fanatics (i.e., this forum), who view the collective Heathen Chemistry album as dull, insipid, uninspiring. bland, and just overall incredibly poor and seen as the weakest ever Oasis album.
Sure, there are some redeeming qualities outside of the singles like Born on a Different Cloud, and Hung in a Bad Place (lyrics aside). But the likes of Force of Nature, A Quick Peep, Probably All in the Mind, She is Love, and Better Man are more of a bad parody of Oasis than anything else.
Tl;dr Why do those who identity as casual listeners of Oasis appreciate Heathen Chemistry when the main fan-base of Oasis can't stand the album?

Yeah I have no idea. Contrarianism?

I personally think HC as a whole is an album that sounds decent initially but gets worse on repeated listens.
Maybe the casual listener never listens to it often enought to really feel the full force of its shitness, whereas hardcore fans will listen to it on repeat.

It's just pretty inoffensive pop music.

I think the casual fan does not FEEL the greatness that Oasis can be and has been, so they really just don't see the difference. These are the people who hear a song on the radio and go 'oh yeah I like that song' and then promptly forget about it. They are not really music lovers. That's not to say that everyone who does like HC is this type of music fan

I think it was the way that HC was marketed as a nostalgia album from the off, Oasis back to basics. So in many peoples eyes it simply HAD to be good. A lot of people bought into that sentiment I think which goes a long way to explain its commercial success.
I would assume that a LOT of the people who bought into it at the time were the new younger generation of fans who weren't old enough to remember the glory days of the 90s so had no true basis for comparison.

I don't see myself as a casual oasis fan but HC is just not as bad as is made out. Decent album from a great band.
It might not be as good as some of there other efforts, doesn't make it crap.

I have a theory that HC was an album targeted at a casual audience.

Just listening to it now in the garden. Great album to listen to underneath the trees with a hot summer breeze and some cold drinks. I dont like the production, Liams voice isnt the best. But theres a good album somewhere underneath those dry guitars and predictical arrangements. With better production or more adventurous arrangements it could have been one of their better albums. Some songs sound ok, they are just too clean. An "exile on Maine St" approach would have made them less radio friendly but more rock n roll (tht, fon, hiabp, paitm,BM). The live versions of those songs are all superior, which says a lot I think. I even think she is love had potential. But the production is just lame. Also some of these songs need horns (Imagine the ending of boadc). They used them more in the 90's but exchanged them for more keyboard in the 00's. Which is a shame, too many songs sound therefore samey (especially the slower Noel sung songs from the 2000-2002 era including b-sides) I am pleased both Liam and Noel are using horns again on tour nowadays. Songs like be here now and greedy soul sound more fresh (and rolling Stones like) and vibrant.
Anyway I do enjoy the album. After the dark sotsog it had a positive feel, also it was released in spring 02, which for me was a special period in my life. So it also brings back good memories.

I cannot for the life of me fathom how anyone can say HC is the worst Oasis album while the almighty turd that is Dig Out Your Soul exists. I mean Force Of Nature, Probably All In The Mind and Better Man are utter shite but the rest of the album is pretty solid with some of their best singles ever. DOYS on the other hand has two good songs on it, Shock Of The Lightning and I'm Outta Time (best Oasis song ever post BHN in my opinion and also Liam's best song). Bag It Up is alright and I like The Turning but the rest of the album is shocking.
