Ok, I know I will get shot down for this but what the hell here goes.
Why is there so much love for album version of Columbia? I will never understand it. It’s the same beat all the way through, the type of thing other tracks would get slated for, as well as some of the worst lyrics Noel has ever put on record. People slate tracks like Force of Nature, She Is Love etc but at least they have lyrics which mean a little something, here it just doesn’t. Now, before people jump in and say that the lyrics don’t matter, let me say this. If all that matters is the beat and the lyrics are secondary to that, then why do people not like something like Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is (STOTOG own Columbia) or even (Get Off Your) High Horse Lady as they too have pointless lyric and have a bit of a beat. This is another thing to the whole lyric/beat argument is that Columbia seems to avoid criticism purely because it’s on Definitely Maybe.
Definitely Maybe is a great album, it would be better without deadwood like this song and Shakermaker (which I will talk about at a later date), I always replace it on a playlist for Fade Away and it does a better job than Columbia.
For me, I guess my biggest problem with Columbia is the lifelessness that the recorded version has compared to the live version. Live, the beat works so well, on the album version it’s lifeless and the production of this track is so bad that it hurts my ears to listen to it at times. In my mind, this would almost be saved if it were actually the first track on the album, the lead in to Rock N Roll Star, but I think it fails even in that due to the poor production. It should more like the live version but it isn’t.
That is why I don’t get the love for the song, recorded version anyway, as I have stated above, it gets away with a lot compared to others tracks which do a similar job.

I can't listen to the album version any more after hearing the Barrowlands 2001 recording.
That said... "same beat all the way through"? Can you say house music?

Noel wrote a part of the lyrics and yes...the album versión is great. The wall of guitars...the guitar solos...the reverb in the drums...I love the guitar parts in the demo but ... the album versión is so much bigger.

Massive highlight on DM!!
Its lyrics are about a massive drunken night out with the lads and necking some ecstasy and ‘avin’ it large. Proper mega.

Shitty lyrics? "I can't tell you the way I feel, because the way I feel is oh so new to me" is a GREAT piece of lyricism.

Early Oasis doing a fusion of shoegaze and madchester. It's a brilliant piece of music. Thread closed.

It’s very very heavy dance music.
Trance like in its constant looping chords, yet despite just three chords over and over again, the song builds and builds and builds, with layers upon layers of guitar added. Never has so much power been yielded from one chord after the other. Each chord sythes through the air and is enough to bring down every building where the sheer strength of sound penetrates through walls and reverberates in all the empty spaces.
It’s intense and is by far the most wonderful way to go deaf.
One of the very very best Oasis songs. They’re a band that largely writes pop songs that are rocked up, but this one is pure rock in its sheer epic sound and intimidating stature.

I also love the fact that it was used at the start of Supersonic. Wish I could've experienced it in a teather, must've been monumental tbh

I felt the floor was bouncing when Supersonic kicked in. I bought a DVD of it afterwards and watched it at home, but it was never same.

I love it and it does sound better live, but then so do so many Oasis songs. I also really like PYMWYMI. Oasis lyrics don't really bother me, if I want poetry, I read a poem. For a band like Oasis, the greatness of the lyrics are the fact that 50000 people can sing them together half pissed.

It was the perfect choice for the beginning of the documentary. Columbia is Oasis at their best

Would be fuckin mega if Liam added this to his set for the summer gigs tbh. Should be easy enough for his band and hell he wrote part of it anyway so why the fuck not

Liam's backing band doesn't play loud enough so I don't think this song would work with their current style. Easy to play maybe but the Oasis tone won't be easy to nail...

Early Oasis doing a fusion of shoegaze and madchester. It's a brilliant piece of music. Thread closed. Perfectly put. I love so many live versions of the song but the album version of Columbia just sounds bigger, fuzzier, heavier, and more dense as the guitar layers pile on and the chords swirl away round and round and round.

WRONg. Columbia is hUGE. It's a simple song. It's all about the style. It's just a noise parade with some decently hazy, star dazing vocals and layered guitars. It's a late night on the town and you're drifting off, about to pass out. You put this on for just a little more kick to make the night one to remember.
