Saw Noel blow the roof off of the Jack White theater the other night in Detroit.
I haven't seen anyone offer a truly great write-up on that show, so later on this evening, I'll try to give it a shot. There was MUCH to love at this one, with several key moments that were just standouts. Some truly great memories, filled with the classic Gallagher banter. Rest assured- The Chief was on fire this evening, and *everyone* in the theater knew it. The crowd loved this show.
There are quite a few cell phone videos leaking out of this gig. I want to say definitively, here and now--- these do not offer a fair representation of the gig, the mix, the sound or how well Noel performed. To be clear, whether it was Holy Mountain, the new rendition of Go Let It Out or they "Hey-ay-ay's" in Fort Knox (which Noel sings himself live) the entire band was *on point*. They sounded tremendous and didn't miss a note.
There's something really different about Noel this time out, and I think that as you guys all get to see this tour live that you'll agree with me: Noel is really happy again, his band has gelled as a close-knit family and he's truly found his confidence as a front man with these people behind him.
To be clear: this is his new band. It's no longer so much "Noel playing his songs with some talented folks"--- this is really apparent on the new material- it truly comes alive during a performance. Beautiful World, which I was hyped for from that early sample, but felt a little bit let down from the complete version on the album is an absolute ripper live. The vocal effects (blinded by the light, try to catch my breath) are just wild. There's so much going on to create this wall of sound thing he's got going on... the cellphone shit doesn't capture what he's doing.
This isn't an Oasis show, or even Britrock. This is something eclectic and different. It's massive and overwhelming live. These songs absolutely blast you. The only HFB songs that really hinted at this were Riverman.
I guess all this is to say that the album just doesn't capture the energy or the sheer force of the new material. Having heard this stuff blasted in my face, I can see why he was so excited and I can see even more why he seems to think this stuff is so much different than his old material: the mix on the album made it sound a little bit samey when it's anything but.

Perhaps Gem and Chris joining the band has a lot to with it too. They are both very talented if not the best at what they do, Gem has a very unique tone and distinct tone, while chris has his own style too. Jeremy and Tim just seemed like fill in musicians to me.

Couldn't agree more on Gem and Chris. I've seen Noel in 2015 and 16, but I'm by far most excited to see him in a couple weeks than before cos of how good they sound as a band.

Reading that it's even more frustrating he hasn't played TMWBTM yet haha
That's the most 'powerful' song on the album by far.
Hopefully it's in for the big UK arena gigs.

I'm so pleased to see Gem and Chris working with any of the Gallaghers again. Gem's had a rough patch of it and I'm hoping he's going forward in good health.

tbf I do believe you about all the stuff about Noel and the band really upping their game this time. The problem I have is that I'm not really interested in half the set, and in the 17 years I've been going to Oasis and its constituent parts live, this is the first time I've ever felt that way.

From all the videos, he does appear to be in such a different place now.
Not better. Not worse. Just different.
It's like the new stuff has given him that extra push to be a bit more adventurous in terms of how he goes about his gigs, and the new members have definitely injected fresh blood into the band as well.
Great to see. Hopefully that reflects with a few more changes to the set before the UK!
